Speed, internal server errors, and the htaccess file

Post by joomjohnny5 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 8:43 pm

Ok, got a good one. Very much appreciate in advance any thoughts or advice:

Been having issues with Network Solutions for a while. Internal server errors and VERY poor performance. They said they have done all they can, moved us to a newer server, optimized the database, and updated the PHP.ini file.

But after getting a support ticket in, they contacted me and said:

"The issue is typically caused by an incorrect rewriteRule in htaccess" ?????

For my fresh 1.6.1 site, I have not touched the htaccess file, but am having this issue with ALL our Joomla sites (1.5.x sites, too) which the only thing I have changed is maybe the # RewriteBase / line to a new directory..

Any ides from the more experienced users or others on Network Solutions? Thanks!

I have just noticed that you posted:
# RewriteBase /

the:
#
Comments out the rule.

It should be:
RewriteBase /

if root

after '/' add directory if required.

Call me crazy, but I just compared with and without the RewriteBase command commented, and I swear my site runs quicker WITH it commented out, but it functions either way (still with long server request times, however).

Could it be the case that if the command is not needed with the particular server, it's quicker to comment it out and not use at all?

Also noticed that enabled the cache plugin in 1.5 completely ruins my site and takes out menu and messes up the CSS, weird. Seems fine in 1.6. Same goes with the extension JCH Optimize, but could be a Virtuemart thing since I dont have Vmart on my 1.6 site..

Seems like there are a lot of little steps to improve site performance, I wish there was an all encompassing guide.. but that would just be too easy for us opensource-ers :)
