Joomla Website Using Too Much CPU and RAM

Post by SOAMJENA » Fri Oct 18, 2013 12:20 pm

We have a Joomla website which hardly gets 500-600 unique visits per day. Its one of the only 6 sites, which are hosted on the 1GB VPS account at LiquidWeb.

I asked them root cause of this load spikes and they said, the Joomla site is the culprit.

And replied this,
I took a look at the slow log for MySQL. It looks like most of the reported slow logs are related to user/database: joomcd_xxxx It is not the only one, but it is the majority.

That may give an indication as to why the Joomla site is being listed as a high resource usage.
So, how do we debug whats going on and how to fix it ?

I cant imagine such a small Joomla site trying to take down the server 5 times every hour and Im losing business, clients , money and all of my time on it.

Are you able to use any caching to avoid all the queries? Repairing and optimizing the database helps.

Check the stats in awstats (cpanel) and see how much traffic/requests you are really getting. Visitors are only a fraction of traffic. I had a site and my hosting company said the same thing and the access logs showed bingbots were requesting pages 37,000 times per day causing the same issues with database and CPU.

I ended up switching PHP handlers which has really helped.

DSO and mod_ruid2

So far it's working well. There are a number of things to be aware of from what I read. I would thoroughly research this before tying it. mod_security is one that no longer is compatible for example.

I have to wonder what the real value of a "VPS" account is.
Don't HACK the Joomla! core, Instead "Extend" and/or "Override."
Stay ON the update path.

Did anyone solve this problem? I went live with a site last Thursday and I'm having to reboot my server every 24 hours as the RAM is exceeding the 2GB limit.

I have a number of other Joomla sites on the VPS with no problems. The only difference with this one is I have Komento, Spambotcheck and Fieldsattach plugins installed. I'm also using MySQLi but all other sites are MySQL.

Any tips on how to solve this as I can't disable any of those plugins.

Many thanks
