Turning on SEF breaks multi language support

I have Multi language enabled on a Joomla 2.5.17 install.

It works fine so long as I don't enable Use URL Rewriting withing Global configuration.
I do however, have a fully qualified url such as

How can I get rid of this and make it like?

URL rewriting needs the htaccess.txt file name to be changed to .htaccess
