As you are probably aware, in early history of Christianity there were hundreds of gospels and each sect had its own set of gospels. When Christianity became the official religion there was a need to standardize on the set of gospels that agreed with the doctrines enunciated by the Church in the capital of Roman Empire. This became the Canon.

The same way your site may be reached on a very basic way with www or without www and Google will count both of them as separate pages so you need to specify if you want www.site.com or site.com as canonical version of your page so Google only sees this version. At deeper level of sites there may be different URLs of the same content and you want Google to see only one version otherwise you might duplicate content penalty. I believe Joomla 3.0 does have canonical links but an issue with it is that it displays current URL as the canonical one.

Canonicalization is the process of selecting a URL when you have multiple choices and this issue occur mostly for home pages, For ex most website's home page have all of the following url's:

www. example. com
example. com/
www. example. com/index.php
example. com/home.asp

So how should we, in Joomla, fix this?

For normal Joomla Content there must be some human interaction that decide what page should linked to what other page as canonical.

You can install a SEO extension that can handle this.
