Ways to create a template in Joomla

Post by abrodski » Thu Feb 12, 2015 9:32 am

Hello!

I was just wondering about different ways I'd seen in some tutorials on creating Joomla templates from scratch.

Like some use Photoshop and .psd mockups. But recently I've watched a tutorial in which a guy explains a different way. He goes to Joomla API site and use stuff from there...

So please do explain to me the advantages and drawbacks of both methods. And also, of course, the difference in approach in those ways of creating a Joomla template.

In the end, they are the same. The template must be created using the Joomla API. The question is whether you tend to write code by hand and only need to know the Joomla additions in order to create a design; or whether you tend to go through a typical designer's work flow, and then need to follow a tutorial in order to make it install and use Joomla's features.

Thanks for your reply!
No, I'm not a coder, so I would definately prefer the latter option. But what is a "typical designer's workflow" as you put it, may I ask?

Hi Abro,

1. you can learn basic guide to create template:
https://docs.joomla.org/Creating_a_basi ... !_template

2. use extension to help create template here:
http://www.template-creator.com/en/

3. if need to see more, you can copy one demo template from joomla core and check it.

The distinction I was making was coder vs designer workflow. A coder is going to be interested in the Joomla-specific fundamentals and only almost-incidentally wants to arrive at being able to create a template. A designer cares little-to-nothing about the Joomla-specific stuff and just wants it to work.

Or more to the point, I was trying to explain the two methods you yourself mentioned, back to you. They are the same except for the approach (and therefore the same except for the mentality of the doer).
