Cannot login to Administrator: error 500

Hi
One of my sites (Joomla 2.5) cannot be accessed via the Administrator, due to passwords lost and the site being hacked. The site is visible and functioning as it should. I have access to the cpanel via a WHM account.
I have tried for 4 days now to gain access in all manners possible as described on this and other forums.
I tried to run the AFP script on the site without success - only Error 404 returned.
Changing passwords in PhPmy Admin - no success
Editing configuration.php - no success
Adding users or Super Users - no success
Still getting Error 500.
Error logs visible on site empty.

Can anybody please assist - I have reached my ceiling of knowledge with Joomla.

Will it help to load a fresh install of Joomla over the existing installation, without damaging the site's operation and functioning?
