HELP - Migrate from MAC/Apache Joomla 1.5 to Windows 2.5

Post by GregO64 » Mon Sep 10, 2012 7:30 pm

This might be a very sticky process. Any practical step-by-step help would be much appreciated!

Do I install 2.5 on Windows and then just try to import the old 1.5 database structure? Do I upgrade the current MAC/Apache version from 1.5 to as high as I can go then load data over to Windows? I am totally NEW to Joomla and barely know how to edit content etc. The more information you can provide the better.

Once I make it through this, I will happily write up an article to post to the forum that might help others. I need to somehow accomplish this in the next couple of weeks. Yikes!

Thanks!

Welcome to Joomla forum!

No, the database structure of Joomla 1.5 & 2.5 differ.. You'll need to migrate the content:
1. Install JUpgrade on Joomla 1.5 to migrate to 2.5
2. or install a new Joomla 2.5 website + commercial extension SP Upgrade, and retrieve the old data from your old J1.5 database.
I prefer the SP Upgrade method.
Do I upgrade the current MAC/Apache version from 1.5 to as high as I can go then load data over to Windows? I am totally NEW to Joomla and barely know how to edit content etc. The more information you can provide the better.
I would do the migration on the same system, and move it to the other system afterwards (using Akeeba back-up + Akeeba's kickstart to restore on other system).
But it's just a personal preference...

Thanks Peter! I am using the same PHP Library on both systems which I think is important. So to confirm, it sounds like the best approach would be to....

1. Create a copy of the current system on the MAC, test it and make sure it works...Joomla 1.5...using Akeeba?
2. Upgrade/Migrate the copy to 2.5 on the MAC
3. Install Joomla 2.5 on Windows and retrieve the old data from the MAC (how is this done exactly?...using Akeeba again?)

Sounds like I need to do some research on Akeeba as I know nothing about it.
Thank you so much for your help! It's going to be an interesting experience, that's for sure. I just pray it is a smooth process.

Yes, backup the site with Akeeba & restore on other system with Akeeba's kickstart.

[Mod note: Moved from Upgrade Forum to Installation Forum; For future reference please read Which forum to post your question
Deal with the change of server location as a separate entity to the Joomla Migration as directed by Peter above.
Are you installing on IIS MSSQL and PHP (IMP) or Apache MySQL PHP (AMP) again on Windows.
If IMP read the sticky announcement in this forum.
Make sure your new server meets the 2.5 Technical requirements

Download and install the Akeeba Backup extension and follow the extensive documentation on its use. This is becoming one of the most essential Joomla Extensions for all sites: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... ackup/1606
Read the extensive documentation on-line at Akeeba Backup or download a copy of the same.;
