Upgrading from 2.5.7 to 2.5.27 - 500 server error
I am trying to upgrade our site from 2.5.7 to 2.5.27 using the file Joomla_2.5.x_to_2.5.27-Stable-Patch_Package.zip via Extension Manager Install.
I get a 500 Internal Server Error as follows:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
and have no idea why. There is nothing in the server error log except these lines
File does not exist: /home/xxx/public_html/500.shtml, referer: http://www.xxx/administrator/index.php? ... _installer
File does not exist: /home/xxx/public_html/404.shtml, referer: http://www.xxx/administrator/index.php? ... _installer

Try it manually using the extension installer. Install the package as you would an extension.
Scratch that. I just paid attention to the fact that you did use the installer. Try updating to a lesser version then move up.
Are you having similar errors installing extensions? If so, com_installer may be corrupt. You can try to correct the files by uploading the com_installer directory from the J2.5.7 package then try to install.

Re: Upgrading from 2.5.7 to 2.5.27 - 500 server error
Thank you for your responses.
As I had the same result when I tried to upgrade to 2.5.24 I will try uploading the contents of com_installer (2.5.7) by FTP and try again. I have previously copied the 2.5.7 site to a localhost and successfully installed the upgrade to 2.5.24 on that.
If this doesn't work, can I try doing a manual upgrade as described in http://docs.joomla.org/J2.5:Upgrading_f ... ng_version (Method C - Manual Upgrade)? We are on shared host and it can sometimes be rather slow.

You can try the method suggested, I don't see any reason for breakage after. Be sure to follow the backup guide

Re: Upgrading from 2.5.7 to 2.5.27 - 500 server error
I uploaded com_installer from administrator\components after renaming the original folder to com_installer_saved. Then I tried to install the upgrade using Joomla_2.5.x_to_2.5.27-Stable-Patch_Package.zip and Extension Manager but still got a 500 error.
Was this the correct com_installer folder (there appear to be several) and if so what should I try next?
Thank you for your patience - I am not a Joomla expert

The error may well be with your host since the package works on your localhost. Let them know of the error and if possible, do the same test on another remote server.

Could this problem be due to the PHP version? The server runs 5.3.26 whereas my localhost has 5.5.

Re: Upgrading from 2.5.7 to 2.5.27 - 500 server error
Success I found the answer in this thread http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=708&t=784274. The problem was caused by a row in table xxx_update_sites which had a name="Unknown Site" and an empty field location.
I read the attached PDF as well then deleted the 'empty' row from the table. I purged the Extensions cache then ran Check For Updates which came back with 'update to 2.5.27 available'. I ran the update directly from the screen and it has installed successfully.
I'd like to thank forum member illovo for putting me on the right track, and to everyone who has done their best to help.

Good stuff. Edit your first post with [SOLVED] or select the checkmark icon, so others with the same problem can use the solution
