Old Joomla site, Migration from one Windows VM to another

Post by MC9 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 7:10 pm

Company currently has a Joomla site that is running version 1.7.2 I think. We have it running on a 2003 Windows VM and are trying to migrate it to a new 2016 windows VM. Any help would be welcome on how to move the site over. we are using mysql work bench for the data base as well.

Mod. Note: Relocating the topic from 1.5 to the 2.5 forum. 1.7 is a pre-release of 2.5 valid for six month in autumn 2011.

Upgrade to 2.5.28 and go from there. The current version is 3.8.13

What type of web server are you running?

basic IIS, also sorry for putting the post in the wrong location. As the intern for the company I can not make the choice at the moment to upgrade to 2.5.28

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/j2xml/ their download site has different versions to install in different versions of Joomla. If you use a fresh Joomla install (no sample data) you can move your Categories/Articles and users. You will need to recreate the menus and install the latest extensions ... but it is cleaner than updating and many of your 3rd party extensions might not work on 3.8.x.

As an intern for your company, I would strongly suggest that you give your CIO a poke in the ribs and inform them that (a) their company's website is using software that is unsupported, (b) the software being used was last maintained about seven years ago and (c) it's time the company paid some attention to their website before it capsizes and becomes a forgotten footnote on the internet.

There is no support for J! 1.7; the same can also be said about J! 2.5 (that was J! 1.7's successor). Even support for IIS is somewhat limited (regardless of whatever version of Joomla we're discussing). Do your job as an intern; improve your career prospects: wake up your CIO! Point your boss to this discussion topic. 8)
