Big 1.5 cms with only articles. Can i migrate? How safe?
Hi guys i have a big CMS, we put up news items every day for almost a year. We only have 5 users that are registered.
Our website only consists of articles 2000+ and images accompanying the articles. Maybe just one third party extension but that can be uninstalled and the MySQL DB is only 13mb in size.
I have been reading this migration method by Joomla. http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Migrati ... Joomla_1.6
I would really like to upgrade as our team is growing and really could do with new user permissions and the other features it portrays. How likely do you think my migration will be successful?
A response from the Joomla team would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

If you are reading the tutorial then you realize that using jupgrade creates a new instance of Joomla 1.6 in a separate directory and copies all of the articles over into a new database. Your old website will not be changed. You can then evaluate for yourself the effectiveness of the procedure.

If you read what I posted, I essentially said you have no risk trying it out and making your own evaluation.

Since you are looking to do a fairly "straighforward" migration of articles, you could certainly give it a try. What is your suggestion or advice on this?
As Dave mentioned, the jupgrade makes a new 1.6 site for you and migrates (or tries to) your data to the 1.6 site.
Because it leaves your 1.5 site untouched, there is no risk in trying it (except the loss of some time, perhaps).
It may work well for you, and if so, that's great. Then you are ready to move forward.
If not, then we just wait a while longer for final bugs be be worked out of jUpgrade and try again in a week or so.
Now, there are some things that jUpgrade will not do (and will never do) related to 3rd party components. And the author with community help is making it better and better.
But give it a try. You have nothing to lose, and it may do everything you need at this point in time.

You really have nothing to lose as Dave and John have said in trying it out. Especially if you download and install a backup of your site on a server set up on your computer using WAMP, MAMP or XAMPP. I just did a test migration of one of my sites and had no issues migrating over all of my articles. Modules and Menus didn't fare so well, but with this migration I am doing a redesign and restructure anyways so it wasn't a big deal.
I use a local server installation for extension/installation/upgrade tryouts all the time. For more information on local server installations:

I see, i will try this soon.
I dont think i will be so bothered about my modules, i'll just reset them.
As for the menu does it leave the joomla default menu? So you have to recreate your sections and categories etc?
Cheers

Re: Big 1.5 cms with only articles. Can i migrate? How safe?
I didn't have to create new categories and sections or reorganize my articles. The migrator migrated my sections to be top level categories and any categories inside of those sections to be nested.
Menu migration was a big odd in that the menus migrated, but there were issues with the menu parameter settings.
