Upgrade using the extension installer using option 1 or 2. Make sure com_admin knows you are running 172 (id 700 in #__schemas) before upgrade.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
To verify that com_admin knows you are running 172 issue the following in PHPMYADMIN tab SQL:Replace #_ for your prefix. The answer should be 1.7.1-2011-09-20 because 1.7.2 doesn't have database changes and no dummy sql file is provided.
If it doesn't return an answer insert a row with 700, '1.7.2'. This assumes you are running 1.7.2 according to Joomla. Check includes/version.php.
Code: Select all
SELECT version_id FROM #__schemas WHERE extension_id = 700
If it doesn't return an answer insert a row with 700, '1.7.2'. This assumes you are running 1.7.2 according to Joomla. Check includes/version.php.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
There are two issues here
The ftp layer was enabled when it did not need to be
The subdomain links to the site root ... I made a backup of the subdomain and the main site shows a backup of the subdomain.
There appears to be a mismatch of the files to database because the subdomain(after attempting to install 2.5. now gives error 'Fatal error: Class 'JRequest' not found in /home/marijina/public_html/m/libraries/import.php on line 63'
Attempting to update the main site ... need ftp details so I can download the jpa file to work locally.
Addendum
When in the /administrator of the site and click to view site ... it does not display the site it displays the the front end of the sub domain !!!
Need ftp details to see why.
Addendum 2
One possible work around ...
Addendum 3
I received your PM and understand that you are unsure about giving me ftp details. Without seeing how you you have the domain admin open up the subdomain ... I can help no further. Hope the information (provided above) helps you sort out your problem.
The initial cause was a failed update due to you having the 'ftp layer' enabled in Joomla. That was compounded by by setting up Joomla in a sub directory and confusing the 2 instances of Joomla. You need to delete the sub directory, use you backup to create the site locally and fix on your computer. Then transfer the fixed site to the server.

One possible work around ...
- Export the database from the site
- locally on your PC create a blank database and import the sql you exported from the site database
- locally on your PC install Joomla 2.5.0
- Change the details in the configuration.php of the 2.5.0 to connect to the database that has your site data
- In http://localhost/joomla/administrator use the extension manager to install 2.5.8
- If all goes well you will have a database that matches 2.5.8 files
- If not then delete all(except the configuration.php) and replace with 2.5.1

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Fatal error: Class 'JControllerLegacy' not found in /home/abctrust/public_html/administrator/components/com_login/login.php on line 18
We are getting the error above when attempting an upgrade from Joomla 1.7 to 2.5.9 using the Upload Package file option within the Extension Manager, using these instructions these instructions http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_from_J ... Joomla_2.5.
(I initially tried via Extensions Manager > Update > Purge Cache > Find Updates but no updates were found so had to try via the Upload Package route)
This error is not allowing access to the database so any urgent advice would be appreciated.

Download a full Joomla 2.5.9 version and extract locally. Upload and overwrite with ftp all but the 'installation folder" (leave that and do not upload)hiinap wrote: any urgent advice would be appreciated.

The Joomla product went to the component Joomla! update. It won't show anymore on the extension tab update.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
I want to change my template, now i am using ca_cloudbase2_j17 from CloudAccess.net. I am also using the 1.7.1 version of Joomla. My new template requires 2.5.
I tried to update, but even I cleaned both browser's and joomla's caches, updates won't show up.
What do I need to do?
Please help.
Thank you...

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Download 1.7.6 Patch and use extension installer to install it.
Download 2.5.9 Patch and use extension installer to install it.
Set Joomla! update to STS and see whether it sees J3.0.3 update.
Set back to LTS without installing J3.0.3!
Verify extensions availability for J3.
Update extensions to highest version for J2.5.
Update to J3 if all extensions are available for J3.
Update extensions to highest version for J3.0 or J3.1 depending on your timescale.
PS. Fastest way to downloads: google on joomla release 1.7.6, pick the release bulletin. Pick the patch link, look for the right patch and download.

That will tell you which extension is throwing fatal errors. Disable the extension mentioned in the error log and you have your site back on! (inform the extension developer about the error so he/she can correct!)

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Thank you for the guide.
In the end the only way I could upgrade from 1.7.2 to 2.5.9 was to ftp the code and overwrite the old files. But having done so, and then run the Fix on the database I was amazed to see that everything worked immediately.
I was expecting to have to spend some time reconfiguring my template or plugins, but it all seems to be working. Well done Joomla!

Hello,
I have Version 1.7.3 and in the Update tab and when i purged cache and clicked on find updates i see only JCK editor update.
What should I do now? Maybe any other way ?
Did after the update to 2.5 and later to the 3.1 versions my template will need to remake / update?

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Hi
I am on 1.6.0 (I have just taken over the site from a previous owner) I am showing no updates available.
My question is: Can I upgrade directly to 2.5 or do I have to upgrade to 1.7 first? and if so where can I find a file to upgrade as I have searched and found nothing! I am a little confused as I have read many many posts in the last few days!

Yes you can go direct from 1.6.x to J2.5. Follow the practical guide or read more details here: http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_from_J ...
