Users not assigned to any groups
After upgrading to Joomla 2.5, one of my users could not log in. I finally figured out he was not assigned to the Registered users group. That fixed it for him. But I still have several hundred other users where the usertype is blank. Can I simply use SQL to set it to Registered or are there other tables involved?

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Use the Batch Processing of users at the bottom of User Manager to set several users at once.

I upgraded from 1.5.x to 2.5.9 using the SPUPGRADE component.

Perhaps notify them of what happened ? They may need to know if there is a bug ?

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Yes, I've done that. What I'm wondering is if I can simply write a SQL update statement to update the usertype field to Registered or if there is more to it than that.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Batch processing doesn't really do the trick. User Manager doesn't allow you to sort by User Group and the filter doesn't allow you to select users which don't belong to a group.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Yes it does ... you don't need soet by group or to filter. All you need to do is click to view all ... then select all and assign then to the Registered user group.agenda9 wrote:Batch processing doesn't really do the trick. ...

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
If you have a normal setup, you should be able to successfully add the Register user group to all your users even if they already have a higher level user group assigned. It's ok for users to have more than one user group and Registered is usually the lowest level assigned so it normally will be irrelevant unless it's the only group.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
IMHO it is best to only have a user in one user group. Yes it is possible to have more than one user group per user .. but many site owners have problems working out the logic for viewing/access levels. And what users see on the site should be controlled by viewing/access levels first.atarr wrote:... It's ok for users to have more than one user group ...
If site owners add users to more than one user group(before working out their logic for the viewing/access levels) in order control what users see ... then they themselves all mixed up with which user has access to what.
Users access on the site should be entirely controlled by correct use of viewing/access levels having several user groups selected in each viewing/access level. If a user is unable to see all they need from 1 user group ... then a user group should be created and selected in the relevant viewing/access levels. Instead of adding the user to multiple user groups.
Yes I know the default action for the Batch Processing of users is ' Add To Group. But it would probably be better if it was 'Set To Group' ... that way it would prevent inexperienced site owners getting in a muddle with users in multiple groups.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
If you are using Set to Group, then you don't want to use Select All without having an appropriate filter or sort, or you will mess up the users who already have an appropriate group, so the earlier poster would still need a way to change hundreds of users without doing them one by one.
I haven't had a problem with multiple user groups and use them frequently when it's appropriate. It makes role type acl much easier.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Good point ... from the OPatarr wrote:If you are using Set to Group, then you don't want to use Select All without having an appropriate filter or sort, or you will mess up the users who already have an appropriate group, ....
Order by ID ascending should put SU at the top. Deselect SU and any user already assigned(but it sounds like none of the others are assigned). But I still have several hundred other users where the usertype is blank
I was speaking of users assigned to more than one user groups not to having multiple user groups. But if you mean that you don't have problems assigning users to more than one group then ... that is because you are experienced with the logic of viewing/access levels. But there are many website owners that are inexperienced in such matters. They do not properly organise viewing/access levels and user groups ... then get in a mess by trying to sort it out by adding users to more groups.atarr wrote:...

You said "use them frequently when it's appropriate", my point is you are experienced enough to know when it is appropriate. And the logic of setting up viewing/access levels and user groups then assigning the user groups to viewing/access levels is probably second nature to you. However it is not second nature to many thus many website owners get the viewing/access levels and user groups mixed up.
To avoid adding users to more than one user group when it is not appropriate many website owners need to organize their viewing/access levels and user groups correctly. And a lot of problems that I have seen with ACL on this forum is people setting users to more than one user group before correctly creating viewing/access levels with user groups.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Use this SQL to assign users to 2 (registered) that have no group assinment
Code: Select all
insert into j259_user_usergroup_map SELECT u.id, 2 FROM `j259_users` as u
left join j259_user_usergroup_map as ugm on u.id = ugm.user_id
where ugm.user_id is null

Thanks - that;s what I was looking for.
BTW - View all wouldn't work for me -- the user list is too long and I received an error.

Re: Users not assigned to any groups
Have the same issue with users inexplicably and no trace of how they became unassigned and are now blank. We have migrated form 1.5 to 3.4 over the years. We think the trace or common path is the user was refunded and canceled out of [spam].
1. we have no way of sorting them so we can see just the users unassigned and we have thousands of users. So the batch process wont work.
2. Were using 3.4 will the sql query still work?
