It would probably be quicker to build the site from scratch with 3.3.6 than to migrate the current 1.5 site.

You need to update 1.5.23 to 1.5.26
Then migrate to 3.3.6 There are tools that do that but they do not migrate your extensions.

The simplest way to upgrade from 1.5.23 to 3.3.6 is to install 3.3.6 without sample date and rebuild your site from scratch.

If you wish to ignore the advice then http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... -migration

I accidentally stumbled over this post. With all respect (?) but this is hilarious!

You are stating here that any Joomla 1.5-user should simply start from scratch? That Webdongle shows extremely bad judgement!

Users can upgrade/migrate still from Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 3.3.6 so your remark is totally unacceptable! ???

@w3cares: Ignore what Webdongle posted here.

Just install a (commercial) extension such as SPupgrade and be migrated in 10 minutes to Joomla 3.3.6!

Phew

The migration tools just migrate Joomla ... with a few exceptions they do not migrate 3rd party extensions. So whether a site is migrated from 1.x or a clean install of 3.x is made then either way the modules and Template need to be replaced.

There are Pros and Cons for both methods
Pros for migration
  • Articles are migrated
  • Users are migrated
Cons of migration
  • Database construction differs from a clean 3.x install and can cause problems later on.
  • Menus need to be replaced
  • 3rd party extensions still need replacing
  • Template needs replacing
Pros for clean install
  • No compromise in the database structure
  • Articles can be created or exported/imported just as easy as migrating
  • Users can be exported/imported just as easy as migrating
Cons of clean install
  • Depending on the size of the site it can take a little more effort
The method used is a matter of preference but imho (after trying both methods) the benefits of having a clean database make rebuilding on a fresh 3.x install the most preferable option.

All of this is written with very limited knowledge about the actual migration/upgrade processes it seems despite all your contributions which would suggest different and many of your statements are actually misleading or plain wrong to say the least. I seldom judge people who contribute as much as you have done for The Project but in this matter all the by you mentioned "cons" and "pro's" of upgrading any site to Joomla 3.3.6 from either Joomla 1.0 or from Joomla 1.5 (which you mentioned in your OP) are very much disputable and I will reply at length in my next reaction to each and every point.

Just for your information Webdongle, we have in Joomla a working group working on tools/methods to make migrating Joomla to latest J3.3.6 (from J2.5 for instance) a very simple task. I am proud after being invited to be part of that working group (about 90 people work on this!). I also like to emphasize that we (GWS-Desk.com) are doing at present about 15 migrations per week from J1.0, J1.5 to J2.5 to latest version J3.3.6 and I can only very slightly find any connection in our experience compared to your listing above which is plain wrong which I will present tomorrow as a reaction. (As you know I am on GMT +/+ 7 at present so for me middle of evening in my spare time)

Again as a first reaction I state once again that your "advise" to rebuild a Joomla - site (in case of Joomla 1.5 current) is in principle plain wrong and misleading for many users so Joomla users are strongly advised not to follow up on the advise given by Webdongle to rebuild a Joomla 1.5 site instead of migrating this to Joomla 3.3.6. I present the reasons as stated tomorrow October 17th so I can calm down after reading so much destructive advise!

For those who have a Joomla J1.7 site who want to migrate to J2.5 follow this guide I posted viewed only 113.000 times (!). For who want to upgrade from J25 to J3.3.6 follow this guide I posted. The spupgrade user guide (which we use in all our operations for migrations from J1.5/1.6/1.7) explains precisely how easy it is to do this migration straight from J1.5 to J3.3.6

These guides show already how wrong the advise is to rebuild a site as general advise and again I will respond in detail next as stated.

my thoughts on the matter of if someone should start from scratch or use a tool is simple:

if the site is very, very small (like less than 20 pages and all of them have their own menu item) then go ahead and start from scratch.

if the site is any larger than that, i like to use a tool as it allows me to keep all the item IDs which can help with search engine ranking. also tools allow me to move the menus and modules (yes, i realize only for core).

the third-party extensions have to be taken on a case by case, one at a time basis and researched individually to get the migration path for each. this is regardless of tool or from scratch.

This topic is about migrating 1.5 not 2.5 and what I have said applies to 1.5.
