You cannot delete the view access level

Post by mem89756 » Sun Jan 30, 2011 3:49 am

You cannot delete the view access level '5:<company name>' because it is being used by content.

I have deleted all content relating to articles, menus, categories.
Any idea why this delete error message is persisting?

Did you also empty the trash as appropriate? There is a filter for published/state which you have to filter to Trash to permanently delete items.

I went to the trash status for ALL (content, categories, menus and modules) and did the permanent delete, but I still get that cannot delete because content in use error when trying to delete an access level.

Can anyone give more insight to this matter?

I had the same problem..

I could not delete the access level named "Customer Access Level" that was created with the sample data when I installed Joomla.

I started writing this post then decided to check absolutely everything I could find...

Under Components, check Banners, Contacts and Newsfeeds, and check your modules.

Hope this helps someone find the answer a bit faster.

Extensions > Module Manager > Select Access > Customer Access Level .. there is a module named Special.. remove that module, empty the trash.. then you can delete Customer Access Level in Access Level

Tip:

Use phpMyAdmin to browse through table Jxx_categories, and find the entry with "access" = the value you want to delete. It usualy reveals where to look for the culprit.
If you still can't find it in the Administrator end, change "Access" directly in phpMyAdmin to another known and acceptable value.

@Yxos: thanks for the hint... using the same method I found some orphaned data records in a third party module that still had the access level I was trying to delete. Good old referential integrity ;-)

I had this issue and it turned out to be the new fangled search index.

I had set an article to a group with an access level id = 4.
I ran the Search Indexer
I assigned that article to another group so I could remove the access level id = 4

However the Search Index item for this article was assigned an access level of 4 and the access level would not delete.

I just needed to run the Search Indexer again to fix up the permissions, and then the access level delete worked fine.

When trying to delete a Viewing Access Level and you are unsuccessful, the error message will include a number, write the number down.

Using PHPMyAdmin
Select the House icon in the top left corner to ensure you are at the home page.
Select your database from the left column.
Select the SEARCH tab at the top.
Complete the fields as listed below:

Word(s) or value(s) to search for (wildcard: "%"): enter the number you wrote down here
Find: the exact phrase
Inside Table(s): "Select All"
Inside Column: access

Now select the GO button on the right to search.

You will now see a list of results with the number of items within each table that match the Access Level number you searched for. Happy Days :D

ps: you may need to directly edit the table row that matches the number you searched for and change the number, rather than deleting the entry. For example, my result returned the Joomla Admin Update Extension (which I didn't want to uninstall), so I changed the access number to match a different View Access Level.

4 Helping Me, the Joomla Community is what it is because of members like you. To be frank, I probably would have just answered it saying "Check your phpMyAdmin for that access level", which doesn't help certain people. Your clearly defined, easy to understand answer is great for all. Thank you.

Just from personal experience, I had this issue because JomSocial for some reason posted activity on the activity feed with a new custom access level.

Thx again 4 helping me

And my thanks as well to 4 Helping Me. Your detailed instructions solved the problem I was having, which I'd never have figured out on my own. Always a pleasant surprise when someone gives specific instructions like that. Cheers! 8)
