how do I keep registered users from becoming contacts?

Post by palominojones » Thu Apr 04, 2013 2:23 am

All of a sudden, like in the last few months, anyone who registers at our site is put into the registered group, but also is listed as an unpublished Contact. How do I control for that. Is this a default behavior? It never used to happen. I've been on Joomla 2.5.9 for a while and moved to 2.5 last summer, 2012.

If you see contacts(in the front end) when they are unpublished then you are logged in as a user that has 'change status' rights for contacts.

What 3rd party extensions do you have that handles users ?

Where are you seeing the unpublished contacts ?

I only see two contacts in the front end. Me and my boss and only if you want to contact us from a menu at the bottom of the home page. I'm using a JoomlaBamboo template that I've used for at least two years. I don't think it's a third party contacts extension I think it's regular Joomla Contacts Manager. I see the unpublished contacts under the Contacts Manager menu.

I'm thinking of eliminating the registration ability completely, but I need to let a few users login to make changes on the front end so that's why I'm fiddling around with this stuff at all.

The people who have registered lately are coming in under the "Assistants" category that I set up for one person who doesn't use it so I unpublished her. If I delete these contacts, apparently they will still be listed on the user manager page but if I delete this category and someone tries to register and there is no category for them I presume there will be an error.

I just want to find where I told Joomla to let these people be contacts at all.

But you said

Your posts are confusing because you are mixing up the description of what's happening. And how are new users 'coming in under the "Assistants" category ' ? what type of category is that ??? Content, Weblinks ... ?

AFAIK when users are registered they are not automatically created as Contacts. Etheir someone is doing it manually and not telling you what they are doing in the Admin ... or an extension has been installed that does it.

What I said is true, but I *should* have said, people who register are listed in the User Group "Registered" but also show up in the Contact Manager list under the "Assistants" category. This is a category I set up way back two or three years ago I think, but I haven't paid attention to it so I am confused. Thus my post.

No one but me has the ability to make them contacts and the fact that they are is what I'm wondering about. Is there a place where I would have been able to allow this and if so where is it. That's my question.

You have a 3rd party extension that is automatically adding them then. Is K2 capable of that ? It is almost definitely a 3rd party extension that is the cause.
