Need help with User Groups Visibility!

Post by konduct » Mon Jun 17, 2013 5:23 pm

I'm pretty self sufficient with Joomla and I know this has been covered but I've gotten lost and it's not working. I've tried following the guides and really need a someone to walk me through it. Using Joomla 2.5.1.1

I haven't even really gotten into the permissions, although I think I understand them well enough. The problem I am having is trying to control what different user groups can "See" (Specifically with Project Fork Projects) (I think) I know how to set the permissions on the specific content, but the user groups are confusing me... :-[

Here is the structure I'm looking to accomplish.

Registered > Vendors > Specific Vendor Group

Vendors need to be registered.

I would like to assign certain things like a menu to an entire "Vendor" group. (But I only vendors to "See" content assigned to their specific group. See next ...)

I need to assign specific "Vendor" groups to, in this case, Project Fork Projects ... Each project has its own component level permissions similar to content articles.

I need a specific example. I tried Specific Group<Vendor<Registered but the specific group user cannot see the content unless public is checked in the permissions and I def don't want the public seeing it? Seems like I've got something backwards?

How do I setup up the User Group hierarchy?
How do I then setup the viewing access levels?
What should I have to set the permissions for the content?

I've restricted content to registered users before but never another sub group.

I REALLY appreciate any help I can get. This is for a client and I knew this part was going to be the tough part.

Thanks in advance!

Just to add ... Project Fork uses Joomla ACL and has a frontend component so I don't think backend access is necessary for the hierarchy to work.

If you want a specific example, you probably will have better luck requesting that of Project Fork's support. It is likely that most people on the Joomla forums don't have this component and thus can't offer specific advice or a specific example.

But it does seem like your hierarchy of Registered->Vendor->(specific vendor groups) should work for you. For each of the specific consider creating a new access level, and assign each of these new access levels to the specific group to which it correlates. Then, when you have a menu, menu item, module, content, or Project Fork item that is to be shown only to one of these groups, assign it to the access level that is tied to that group.
