Adding new users is not working - J2.5.17

I'm administering a J 2.5.18 site, with multiple access levels.

For several years, adding users has not been a problem. Until the recent J 2.5.18 upgrade.

When I added a new user though the back end, it "seemed" to add the user to the specific registered group properly. When I try to log that user in through the front end, I get the following

"Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet."

The only thing that seems to work is going into the extension menu, and re-installing J 2.5.17 from URL source. This seems to be the only workaround, and this workaround does not seem to be working full time.

Anyone else having this problem?

if you are running Community Builder - 1.9.0 - it has a known error and can be fixed by upgrading CB to 1.9.1

Yes, I'm having the same problem after 2.5.19 update where a new Registered user encounters "You cannot access the private section of the site".... which of course is the main idea? The user is never logged in.

Very few extensions (ie: no CB)
ran SQL commands: SELECT id,parent_id,title FROM `prefix_assets` WHERE parent_id=0;
and UPDATE `prefix_assets` SET parent_id=1 WHERE parent_id=0 AND NOT id=1; in order to update the database. No joy.

Which means what? Adding a brand new (test) user under 2.5.19 resolves to the same errors. Setting a test user to SuperUser is the only way to allow any "registered" users to log in.

Been through every documentation article... ACL tutorials (unmodified)... 3 system audits... multiple.htaccess variations (running php as a CGI)... db queries & repair commands... ALL to no effect. My other sites run fine... on these servers & other servers w/ both 2.5 & 3.2 sites. WTF?

try checking what is in the "livesite" variable in the configuration.php

I'm clutching a straws here but that was an issue with the log in procedure a fair while ago (prob j1.5) - a blank entry for livesite was an issue then - but easy to check and rectify so worth a shot.

I just upgraded my site and discovered my registered users do not have access any longer. I get: You do not have access to the private section of the site. The users are never logged in. Super users have access.

I went through the VERY time consuming process of "Fixing the asset table" and alas there is no difference in behavior. I am not seeing any explanations in the forums for this, but am seeing complaints that are similar.

We need to publish a very important document that needs to be accessible to registered users and we are on deadline to publish it. What will it take to get this fixed?

The default permissions is not set properly in the assets table.

The quickest fix is to install a fresh joomla istallation and migrate the content from the old site with SPupgrade.

The problem with that is I did not migrate, I updated from 2.5.10 to 2.5.19. According to the documentation, SP Upgrade is for migration purposes.

I actually unraveled the problem manually looking through the assets table and comparing it to the categories table and then re-saving all the categories (from more than one component) that were broken or missing in the assets table based on what was in the categories table.

My production site now works, but when I backed it up and FTP'd the back-ups to my local machine to recreate the site locally, I am not able to log into the administrator at all on my local machine, I get a 404. I am now in the process of figuring that mess out.

This seems like a pretty major problem from just upgrading 2.5. I hope someone can look into the cause and try to fix it.

Update more often. Large steps like this can get you into trouble.
Get 2.5.17 first. There is a new password hash method in 2.5.18.

I tried to add someone new as a manager in the Joomla User Manager it either won't create them : JUser: :_load: Unable to load user with ID: 7990 or it deletes them if it's an existing user.
