Download J! 3 Page

Post by mtmeyrick » Thu Mar 21, 2019 3:47 pm

Just been on the menu system to https://www.joomla.org/3/ and when I click "Download Joomla 3.9" it does just that and points me to J! 3.9.0 instead of 3.9.4 (the latest version)

I know it wasn't the right version so have downloaded the latest it just wouldn't be clear to those who are new and followed that link.

The link is still accurate. The text does not claim that the button points to the latest version.

One month from now we will probably have Joomla 3.9.5 and some time later 3.10. Should the link therefore say just 'Download Joomla' and point to https://downloads.joomla.org? That is up to the webmasters to decide.

Personally would say point to https://downloads.joomla.org that way there is a step removed for the person downloading the 3.9 version of J! from that screen.

Just my opinion and was trying to make the product and website more end user friendly to newbies.

There are some things we have control over ... and then there's Google.

I don't know how new users find Joomla (or find the latest download) but I guess they probably use Google. That's what I would do.

When you enter "Download Joomla" in Google you get https://downloads.joomla.org/ (you don't get https://www.joomla.org/3/). In fact, I had to search for several minutes to find https://www.joomla.org/3/.

When you enter "Joomla" in Google you get
g4J!.jpg
The link that I've arrowed is https://www.joomla.org/3/

You will also see (from this Google search result) the reference to Joomla downloads has the description:
Downloads - Latest Release - Extensions - FAQs - Joomla! 1.5
Isn't that quaint? Even though the link to the downloads shown in the above image points to https://downloads.joomla.org/ the Google search result mentions Joomla 1.5. Oh well, that's just a hangover from times past when whoever put the site together has forgotten to update the SEO information, isn't it?

So, yeah, it's possible for new users to be directed to https://www.joomla.org/3/ even if the more experienced among us never visit that page. 8)
