Test Server Advice Needed - LAMP, WAMP, XAMPP?

Post by lastevns » Wed Oct 12, 2016 7:59 pm

I just went through a horrible experience because of a corrupted backup from Akeeba (and, yes, I made certain to download it using the binary method over my FTP). So, going forward I plan to test my backups. Akeeba suggests:
We also strongly recommend testing your backup files, at least the first time you produce a backup and whenever you make major changes/upgrades to your site. Testing the backup archives is trivial. Just download and install WAMPserver, XAMPP, MAMP or a similar package on your local PC to create a local testing server environment. Then try restoring your backup file on the local testing server environment.
I've never done this before. Does anyone here have suggestions for a preferred environment that works well with Joomla and perhaps isn't too tough for a newbie? Also, my host provider is using Apache. But I think all of these include that. Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice.
I'm seriously grateful for the help offered here. It's amazing how willing people are to help. To those who are more negative... please understand, I'm just here trying to learn.

I have XAMPP (with MySQL) installed on my computer (with Linux) and it works well. You can find it on https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html

However, XAMPP has changed MySQL to MariaDB and I'm not sure if this will work with Joomla.

Wampserver 3 at http://www.wampserver.com/en allows you to install several versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP, which is handy for testing extensions. You can also configure virtual hosts by following the tutorials from the Wampserver forum and host a number of sites in your workstation.

AMP = Apache MySQL PHP

M = MacOS
W = Windows O/S
L = Linux O/S

I use the Uniform Server. It's easy to install (even runs from a USB thumb-drive, so is very portable.

It's modular so you can update the PHP (or install multiple PHP releases, and choose which one you want to test your site on, then start Apache,so you can have e.g. 5.6 and 7.x), MYSQL or phpMyAdmin without too much trouble - http://www.uniformserver.com

I have also tried those listed below but found Uniform Server the easiest to set up and use.

Bitnami
WAMPServer
XAMPP
