Front end logins fail but same credentials ok for admin login

Postby steveorg » Wed Feb 14, 2018 8:28 pm

Joomla version: 3.8.5

This problem started suddenly. Logins have worked until just now and I haven't made any changes to the site.

Every login that I've tried on the front end fails with the standard error: "Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet."

A couple of the failed logins also have admin rights and the logins work correctly for the backend.

Any thoughts on how to fix?

The error is exactly what it says. The user doesn't exist or the details are wrong. Make sure you're not using capitals where you shouldn't and use them where you should etc. Don't mix up characters like "B" and "8".

Can you get the users to change the password through the "forgot password" function (that won't work for Admin levels, only Registered and maybe author/editor).

What was the last thing you recall doing, before this started occurring?

There's the rub. The user does exist because the same credentials work for an admin login. I used copy and paste to ensure that there were no typos.

Right before, I used a test login to ensure that a feature was operating properly. Then I tested a different login before providing it to support an extension. That was the first to fail and is one that still works as an admin login.

After testing a few more that failed, I tried the first test login again, which then also failed.

Most login tests were run in new incognito windows to prevent browser caching issues. I also ran one test in a regular browser window.

I tried password resets in the backend, which were no help. Your suggestion of a front-end reset is a good one. However, that is now sending me back to the home page instead of the reset dialogue. That's a new error. :-(

sounds like you have a security extension installed (perhaps admintools) which for security purposes disables the ability for an admin user to log in to the front end

Thanks, but it's also users without admin rights.

Just Jhackguard that attaches arbitrary parameter strings to the admin login URL.

I fixed the reset password issue. After resetting the password, front-end login works. After logging out, subsequent logins with the same credentials fail.

The problem was caused by the System - Page Cache plugin. After turning it off logins worked as expected.

In my first post I quoted an error message. Sometimes I would get this message instead:
Warning
The security token did not match. The request was aborted to prevent any security breach. Please try again.
