Password reset function not working

Post by jnk_joomla » Tue Jul 10, 2018 12:21 pm

Joomla 3.8.10, "clean" install; default template; no added Extensions

The password reset email is received with the expected reset link. Clicking the link simply takes you back to the home page. It doesn't matter if you try this with a "normal" user or an Administrator (not a Super Admin --- I know that has to be done directly in the DB).

Front-end or back-end; doesn't matter! The password reset function is broken ---- and from what I have been reading, it has been broken for a while now. Any solutions that actually work?

Works OK for me site.co.uk/login.html?view=reset&layout=confirm&token=1234567 link takes me to the page with the token field filled in. Filling in the username and clicking submit ... takes me to the page to enter the new password.

That's great, Webdongle, that it works for you. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME!

I haven't read anywhere as a general, world-wide problem, sorry.

You're right that the password reset function (via email, that is) cannot be used with administrator accounts. This feature can only be used under the following circumstances:

1) The mail service is properly configured;
2) The mail service has been tested and an email is received (sometimes emails get "lost" or misplaced as spam).
3) You generally can't do this if the site is hosted on a PC (because there's no mail service)

So, assuming that your website meets these general requirements, I don't understand the general claim that "the password reset function is broken ... for a while now" or where you have been reading these claims. It would be reassuring to know where you've read that. Can you point to a few sources where those claims have been proven? Thanks.

Actually it is more #helpful than you realise. Your OP inferred that the function was broken in Joomla

My testing and report of testing results shows that the error lays with your instance of Joomla. So you can now turn your attention from it being a Joomla error and start looking into your setup.

viewtopic.php?f=714&t=793531 may help in this case and rule out corrupt files, that your definition "clean" install is more accurate than your statement about " it has been broken for a while now". It will also rule out other things.

So lets look closely at the report
1. the mail is being sent
2. the mail is being received
So its nothing to do with the mail settings or where it is hosted

3. tested with a regular user
So its nothing to do with it not being possible to use this function as a super user

4. tested with a clean install
So assuming that this is 100% accurate and includes using a default template we can rule out any interference there

We know that the it works for everyone else so what could be the problem on this specific site

Firstly instead of clicking on the link in the email can you try copying and pasting it directly into the web browser. This will rule out any mangling of the link by your email client.

Secondly as this is a redirect issue please can you disable any htaccess file that you have. This will rule out any effect caused by a rule in that file.

Thank you, everyone, who replied (helpful or not ...). Special props to @brian who seems to be the only respondent that actually read the OP.

Anyway, at this time, the issue has been resolved (well, it worked 1 time with 1 account). The problem turned out to be the A/V running on the webhost's email gateway. The email scan engine was "visiting" the password reset link in the background which rendered the link useless to the person trying to reset their password.

I will never get back the hours spent pouring over logs, will I?
