Hiding Language Options

Post by rogerco » Fri Nov 09, 2018 6:01 pm

All of the sites I run are single language - I suspect this must be true for very many Joomla sites.

Obviously the multi language features are very well used and important for a lot of people, but I wonder if it would be possible to have a global option to turn off all of the language related filtering in the back-end. It just takes up screen real estate with what is from some people's point of view unnecessary clutter and distraction.

You could open an issue in the Joomla! Issue Tracker - CMS (https://issues.joomla.org/) and mention as Feature Request.

A thought: Instead of Global Variable, the multilingual status could be determined by finding out whether the Plugin "System - Language Filter" is Enabled or Disabled.

This will not be modified in the 3.x series as it would not be B/C. Some people may have used the feature for other purposes than originally designed for.

It has already been modified in 4.0-dev

Thanks iamnickam and infograf768

As a long time, but still "Intern" (ie with not much cred here!), Joomlaite I like to check my crazy ideas here for master comment before launching straight into the tracker.
Yes testing the system-language filter plugin and/or the language switcher module sounds like a good approach.
From what infograf768 says it implies that it might be fixed in 4.0 which would be good. Nearly time for me to set up a 4.0 test site I think, but I have a lot of extensions across my existing sites which will probably need updating - some of these may be barely supported old ones so I'll have to wait awhile before switching to 4. I'm reluctant to be running sites on both 3 and 4 simultaneously for longer than absolutely necessary.

By the way what does "as it would not be B/C" mean. Probably obvious once you know ;-)

BC = backward compatible, ie older plugins wont work.

4.0-dev is now at alpha-5.
It is absolutely not ready for production. It can be tested though.
