Unable to edit anything in Joomla backend! Topic is solved

I have been trying to solve this problem for the last few days so if anyone has a quick fix to this problem, I’d love to hear from you.

Currently, any attempt to invoke an edit function in my Joomla Backend results in the source being displayed as per the attached screen shot. i.e. blank edit area screen with a power button/login type icon. If I click the icon I see the outline of the text window with a “circle of doom – processing” animation for a few seconds before the blank screen and icon are re-displayed.

I first noticed it trying to edit a module, but since then each new source type I try gives the same display. It was first evident when using the JCE Pro Editor – as set in global configuration. I could use TinyMCE and “None” at first. Searching for solutions, I found one that suggested it could be a caching problem. I cleared browser and Joomla cache and now the problem has rippled through to any editor I set in Global Parameters.

Other things I have tried. My subscription to JCE – editor Pro expired a while ago so I removed the package and installed the free version.

Schoolboy error I know but I haven’t properly recorded what I have done in the recent past. I don’t make changes to my site very often and even then they are minor.

The most recent significant change I have made to the site prior to noticing this problem has been to activate https on my hosting package and force https support for the entire site within Joomla. I believe I have made all the requisite changes as laid out in the documentation, including suggested changes to .htaccess and configuration.php. I’m not convinced this is the root of the problem. I have tried to backout all the changes I’ve made to implement https and the problem persists. Does anyone agree moving to https is a red herring?

I’m at a loss as to what to try next. The front end of the site is working fine so I’m nervous about some of the options open to me. I’m being prompted to update to version 3.9.23 from 3.9.22 but I’m nervous about updating a dysfunctional backend. Do you agree I should try to fix it at my installed release first?

I’ve seen an option to restore Joomla core components – I’m somewhat of a Joomla novice so I’d need to research and understand the full impact of this. Should I do it anyway? What are the risks to my front end?

The most drastic action would be to restore from my last known good Akeeba backup taken prior to upgrading to Joomla 3.9.22 back in October. I suspect this is likely to be the most time efficient route but would welcome your thoughts. Especially if someone has a quick fix I’ve missed? Any help much appreciated.

LiveSite: Is Not Empty

The variable $live_site in the file configuration.php was used in old versions of Joomla but in Joomla 3.x it is usually empty:

It is not necessary to add the URL of the website into the file configuration.php. Usually all you need to do is to go to Global Configuration - Server - Server Settings and set 'Force HTTPS'.

Error Reporting: none

Please change the level of error reporting in Global Configuration temporarily to 'Maximum' to find out if any PHP notices, warnings or fatal errors are displayed and written to the PHP error log when you try to edit an article. Post the messages here for advice.

Use Webdeveloper tools (press F12) in the browser and check if the Console tab reports any javascript errors. Post the messages or a screenshot here for advice.

Bravo! It's definitely the setting of live_site= in configuration.php that's causing the problem. I felt sure I'd tried resetting this back to null but obviously not. I reset it to null and it's working now. Yay - I can edit again!

I also set error reporting level to maximum as you suggested. Top Tip. I am getting errors displayed on the backend pages as well as in the browser code inspector tools but I'll research those myself and post again if I need to. My priority is to get a few edits done. Thanks again.

Thanks for that but I fixed it by setting live_site= back to null in configuration.php As a double check I tried setting it back to 'https://<my site name>' and the problem re-appeared.
