The administrator horizonal menu bar disappeared

I was editing an article and when I was done and saved it. When I exited the editor, I noticed the administrator top horizontal menu is no longer being displayed. I have to click on the icon in the upper left corner of the page to get the control panel which allows me to continue. I can not figure how this happened or how get horizontal menu bar back. Any help is appreciated.

Very strange and I cannot reproduce this on any of my J! 3.10 websites. It sounds like—if text could speak—you may have some third-party system plugin installed on your website that plays havoc with the backend. I couldn't tell you what plugin this might be because I don't know anything about your website.

The Forum Post Assistant reporting tool can list the extensions you're using and it may provide us with some clues.

The only behaviour I'm award of in J3 when editing (or perhaps for other functions) is the administration menu will usually be "greyed out" in certain circumstances, such as when editing an article. You can see that demonstrated in the following Documentation articles:

I have never heard of the menu completely disappearing.

I'm not sure why @mwales can see (only) the logo in the top left (the Joomla logo as visible in the above screenshots) as that appears to be part of the menu bar that the @mwales has said disappears on exit from editing the article.

@mwales, do you see this same behaviour in any other "editing" function (such as (custom)) modules?

A quick search in google for "admin bar in joomla disappears" only brings back suggestions about user permissions etc., - but if the @mwales has the relevant access I don't see that would be the issue here.

I know I'm speculating. Enough said.

Are you using ARK Editor?

No, I was using JCE Pro. I have ARK and am trying to remove the package, but in doing so it tells me it failed. I also can't update to the new ARK version which also fails. But that is another issue.
Now, I am thinking of totally staring over with a new install of Joomla and extensions and template I have added. I won't delete the database. I will let the install create a new. Later I will point the new install to the old database.
What do you think?

Thank you for your reply. This is how I would verify that you are using the most up-to-date versions of third-party extensions and how to remove those extensions (e.g. ARK Editor) that are "broken":

1) In the backend, go to Extensions » Manage » Discover. click the Discover button, then select any extensions that are discovered and then click the Install button.

2) In the backend, go to Extensions » Manage » Update Sites: click the Rebuild button.

3) In the backend, Extensions » Manage » Update: click the Clear Cache button and then click the Find Updates button.

These steps will show if you have "undiscovered" updates that may be available. It's not a foolproof method because some third-party extensions don't behave the way that they should.

After doing these things you can decide whether you want to keep or uninstall third-party extensions that you may have installed (e.g. ARK Editor); I have seen discussions on this forum where people have had problems uninstalling ARK Editor and you can search for those discussion topics yourself. Theoretically, however, uninstalling extensions is done by going to Extensions » Manage » Manage, enter a few characters in the search filter and then select all those items that relate to the extension(s) you wish to uninstall, and then click the Uninstall button.

After doing these things, try to perform what you did that results in the top menu disappearing after you save an article. There may be something in what I've suggested that could save you a little bit of time.

dSince your last post, something else has happened. I no longer have the same back end template that I am familiar with. I delved into this and discovered that the back end does have two templates. No matter which one I select, I get the same back end look and feel. Not what I had before. I checked my other website and its back end settings and selection are the same as on the problem website. Below is a screen shot of what I have now. Following your instructions are difficult with this template. Also this template is missing the top menu bar. I am giving up and will create another instance of Joomla in a different root directory. Will install version 3.10.3 and point it to the existing database. Hoping this will tell me if the problem is a database problem or a joomla problem.

The "strange" backend is the Hathor template (which has not been maintained for a few years); you need to change to the Isis template.

As far as uninstalling ARK Editor is concerned, I've explained the general principles as best I can. I have never used the ARK extensions. I can't be sure that's what is causing the backend menu to go walkabout when you save an article in fact, I don't know the reason this happens in your case.
