When saving an article, the path name is incorrect

When creating a new menu item or updating a newly created menu item, the path name is incorrect. When the menu item is clicked on the front end, the result is a 404 page.
When I look in the database at menu, the menu item will have a path of, for example, "Category/test" when it should be just "test". If I edit the path and remove the "Category/" part, the page displays as expected.
If I change this menu item again, the path name is back to "Category/test".
This does not happen to menu items prior to a specific time. I can not determine when the behavior changed.

Also, and this is just shooting blindly at the problem, go to Content » Article and select the Options button (right-hand top). On the screen that then appears, look under Routing. What settings are you using for any of those routing options?

I only found one place for Routing. I have, hopefully, included screen shots of the article option page and the group where I found Routing.

Read the reference you provided. My problem is associated with "menu" when saving a new menu, not an existing menu. The path value includes categories when it shouldn't. The reference doesn't say that menus are included in the New routing mechanism.

The path is derived from the menu structure
i.e.
Top menu item 'Pets'
Child menu item 'Dogs' and 'Cats'
Urls are
site.com/pets
site.com/pets/dogs and site.com/pets/cats

(unless you alter the Menu item 'Title field').

It really would help to know the menu item type as well as the menu structure. I agree with @Webdongle: if the menu structure is hierarchical, then the URLs look normal to me.

There is a difference between the menu hierarchy (i.e. child menu items located below a parent) and the "path" (not to be confused with the file structure) and editing the "path"—somehow with phpMyAdmin—is not a solution.

'Path' as in url path is related to menu structure
By 'Path name' which path are you referring to?
