Re: Unable to Access Administrator Website

Post by AMurray » Thu Jun 23, 2022 2:12 am

Thanks for the FPA but what exactly is the issue? "Unable to access administrator site" could be caused by a number of problems.

If it's something simple like a forgotten administrator password, refer to : https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_reco ... assword%3F

From what I can tell the FPA shows no issues at all apart from a few possible out of date extensions. Examples: JCE editor is latest is v2.9.26 (your version 2.7.15); Admin Tools latest is v7.0.8 (your version 6.1.6) and probably others.

Sorry about the lack of detail.

The Joomla pre-update checker indicated that some components/extensions needed to be either disabled or uninstalled prior to upgrading from Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4.14 due to incompatibility issues.

At first I disabled BreezingForms Pro and the JCE Editor, but subsequently uninstalled BF Pro. I also installed RS Forms Pro before uninstalling BF Pro. The update checker does not work consistently by the way.

The first time I tried to update Joomla the installation failed at the 90.7% mark. I got out of the administrator site at that point, but could not access the site after that. I did a restore and was able to get back in the site. Some settings were changed to deal with time out and file size issues.

Another attempt to upgrade failed again at the same 90.7% mark. The hosting service did another restore and now I get a Class 'Joomla\Console\Application' not found when trying to start the administrator site.

@ruesam: welcome to the forum and thank you for explaining the context behind your question.

There could have been a few reasons why your attempts to migrate from J! 3.10.9 to J! 4.1.4 failed and, by looking at the FPA report, I can see that some of the PHP environment settings could be "improved". My recommeded minimum values for certain PHP settings, in order to maintain a J! website properly, are shown in the table below:

What happens after the migration failed is important.

When you "did a restore", how did you go about it? If you don't completely remove all the files from the filesystem used by the J! website and DROP all the tables used by that website, when you "restore" the old files (and tables) there will be files and tables leftover from the botched migration that probably caused you to not be able to access your website.

The fact that the update stopped at 90% complete is also important. Did you examine the update log to find out why it ground to a halt? It may be an idea to read The Joomla Update Log. :)

See my comments above about deleting the filesystem and DROPping all the tables from the database.

I guess that, first of all, you would like to restore your J! 3.10.9 website back to service. Let's do that. I recommend that you create a test lab where you can experiment with migrating J! 3.x to J! 4.x before you attempt to update this particular one. The good news is that your website should be salvageable. 8)

The site is working again after the hosting company did another restore. Thanks for your input because I think it helped the tech support folks who readily admit that they do not have Joomla expertise. Any recommendations?

Getting a false error message that the temp folder for PHP is missing. It is not.

The Pre-Update function does not work consistently. Most times it just takes me to an instruction page. Without it I will have to rely on memory to uninstall components/extensions that it previously told me were incompatible with J4.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Any recommendations about what, specifically?

I suggest to everyone to not rely on any webhosting company to know anything about backing up or restoring people's website.

I recommend that people install Akeeba Backup and learn how to backup and restore their websites themselves. This is the only extension I recommend.

The pre-update check has never been any better than a "best guess". It is maybey 50-70% reliable; depends on how many extensions you have installed. I've never relied on it; do your own checking. Create a test site and install the extensions you're currently using and see for yourself what works and what doesn't.

If you would like more thoughts on the extensions you are currently using with J! 3.x, use the Forum Post Assistant tool to produce a list of them. 50% of most extensions that people commonly use are not compatible with J! 4.x and they need to be uninstalled or updated before attempting to migrate from J! 3.x.

Apropos of nothing, Ark Editor is suspicious for J! 4.x but Breezing Forms and jHackguard are not rated as J! 4-compatible by the people who built them. 8)

Jhackguard is no longer published on the JED with the reason for its removal "PE1". The "View Error Codes" link results in a blank (white) screen.

Interestingly, following a quick search on the net, I found that JHackguard apparently has its origins through SiteGround which developed the extension.

@AMurray: speaking of SiteGround things, the system plugin jSGCache 1.3.3 is also probably a "no-go". I have no idea what extension (or package) instals the "nrframework" system plugin. It could be part of one of those "sunny" J! 3.x templates that will have to be uninstalled. ???

Safest thing to do with third-party extensions (if you don't know what they do) is to disable them or, better, uninstall them and see what happens. ;)

The code PE1 means "Under Investigation".

The error codes are listed at Unpublished Extensions Error Codes.

The issue with the blank page was reported in January at JED Issues as Broken link in unpublished message #243. The JED team had fixed the issue earlier but they did not know why the fix does not go live.

Thank you for your recommendations.

I restored a backup of the site and db, then installed J4 once more but using Softaculous this time. The program said that the installation was successful, but I still do not have proper access to the administrator. All the menu choices are there but not with a graphic format. In fact I get the following error message: 500 Table 'cereli5_joom678.joscw_workflow_associations' doesn't exist.

Please see the FPA report below:

The FPA results from the two versions show libraries left over from Admin Tools. All the sub folders should have been deleted from the Joomla folder before the installation of Joomla 4.1.5. Rather than relying on Softaculous, download and install Joomla 4.1.5 from https://downloads.joomla.org.

Thank you for clarifying.

So in my case, just delete the contents of /home/user/joomla, but leave the empty folder intact?

I should be able to upload the zip package I have of Joomla 4.15 on my local drive, using the html version of the administrator site I am currently working with. But this version does not show the Extension menu, so I won't be able to make sure there are no incompatible extensions re J4.

Thank you for your patience.

I don't understand what the second paragraph above means, sorry. If you are talking about copying a website from one location to another and if the original website was broken-to-Billy-o with something defective (e.g. the absence of the "Extensions menu") then the new website will be just as dysfunctional as the original.

I completely agree with this statement. I never use nor recommend third party-scripted installation methods for J!; I use the official download packages available from https://downloads.joomla.org. If the J! 4.1.5 that you have on your "local drive" is the same as the official download then that's OK with me. If you're going to use that to build a J! 4.1.5 with a potpourri of database tables in the hope that you'll get things going, you could be in for a disappointment. It all depends on what exists in those database tables, doesn't it?

There's an old saying I live by: you can't build a solid building on weak foundations. As I say, I don't know what you're describing. I would recommend that you do not attempt to do anything without a clear plan of what you're trying to achieve.

What do you want to do: resurrect a broken J! 3.10.9 website or are you trying to create a potential defective J! 4.1.5 website?

Even the resurrection of a broken J! 3.10.9 would be welcome at this time. The whole rationale for migrating to J4 was to get better security including the latest PHP 8, as I had experienced breaches on the site. The threat was removed, but I am trying to avoid repetition.

What toivo said about deleting the contents of the /public_html/user/joomla/ folder and then install the Joomla 4.1.5. Made sense to me, if I understood correctly. The zip file on my computer is a download from the official Joomla download site.

To reiterate my question, can I use toivo's approach and then selectively import or copy files from the J3 site to the J4?

Short answer: I don't know (but probably not). Depends on which "files" we're discussing.

This thread has a lot of mixed information.
- If you want to install a fresh Joomla 4, download the package from joomla.org, unzip it, upload it into your server and start the installation (use a new database for it)
- If you want to update an existent Joomla 3 site, make a copy of it (with Akeeba works at best) on a subdomain, check all your extensions manually and make sure they are compatible with J4, make sure the pre-update checker is all green and start the update. If the update doesn't work, delete the files and the database and start from new.
- If you restore a backup after a failed update without removing the files and databse, the restore may work, but the next update will fail again, because you will have a mix of Joomla 3 and Joomla 4 files and database tables.

Thank you for your input but, if I do a fresh J4 installation with a new database, what happens to the information from the database attached to the prior J3 installation?

Does it mean that I have to reinstall my extensions such as RS Files?

If you do a fresh J4 installation the database is empty, you have to reinstall all your extensions and create the content new. There are extensions that can help you to export from one installation and import in another one, like J2XML.

Today I had a similar login issue on a Joomla 4.1.5 website. All at sudden, I was logged out and not able to login. Instead after a login attempt Joomla displayed "You do not have access to the Administrator section of this site."

I tried to create a new Super Admin account (method 2 at https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_reco ... assword%3F ) but couldn't log in either.

After doing some investigation, I found out that in the #__assets table, the 1st record (id=1, 'Root Asset') was missing.
And that record contains ACL rules like for core.login.admin.

I copied that 1st record from the database of a working Joomla 4.1.5 site,
imported that into the database of the non-working website,
and that solved my login issue.

I have not found why/how that 1st record from the #__assets table was deleted.

Thanks all, for your very good suggestions. I think I will try the J2XML extension approach mentioned by drmenzelit.

This experience has made me rethink the CMS platform, particularly since my website is so small.

I agree with @Webdongle. For J! 4.x, session handler options are either "Database" or "Filesystem". I tested one of my J! 4 websites with the FPA and it reported "filesystem" (not "none").

That is the option 'PHP' from Joomla 3.10. Was this value copied from Joomla 3.10 files, saved before the site was updated to Joomla 4?

Saving 'none' in Global Configuration of Joomla 4.1.5 changes it to 'database'.
