Front end submission to create magazine

Post by giannopk » Thu Sep 22, 2022 12:37 pm

Hi, I would like to create a magazine using Joomla.
I would like the users to be able to register from the front end and then be able to submit their articles in a specific category.
The administrators will see these articles and approve them or not.
Then there will be a display page, the magazine issue page (probably a blog layout?) with the approved articles by the administrators.

Is there any way I can do it in Joomla?

Perhaps you may suggest me an extension for this purpose as well? (submission, approval, issues creation)

Thank you

User Registration is easily done, it's a primary function of Joomla, so you need a "register" and "login" menu links (set to Guest) and/or a login module set to Public (I think), but the register/login links are on the module as well.

I believe you would set the users in the "Authors" user group (rather than Registered). They can create content but not edit or publish.

The specific layout setting will be the job of the site admins. All the normal users are doing are submitting the basic content as an article.

Not sure about selection of the category but I assume they can do that as well, without any additional extensions.

1. Create a user group with Registered as Parent (do NOT alter any Permissions in Global config)
2. Select the new user group in any view level you want them to see
3. Set the relevant Create,Edit own in the Permissions for the Category(ies) you want them to Create etc in.

#1 Just allows members of the new group to login front end.
#2 Allows members of the new group to SEE Articles etc. set to those access/view levels
#3 Allows members of the new group to DO with Articles of the Category(ies) you want them to Create etc in etc.

Please read https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Access_Con ... t_Tutorial Until you understand the above steps.
(it applies to J4 as well as J3)

N.B.
'Edit State' controls Publishing Permissions. Leave it default 'Not Allowed (Default)' to prevent them Publishing Created/Edited Articles

You could use a 3rd Party extension for Catalogue layout but you need to understand the ACL first.

Thank you for your replies!
I have used the ACL before to allow admins to submit articles from the front end, but never to allow ordinary users. Thanks for the instructions.

Something that relates to the magazine, do you know if I can somehow alter the blog layout to a more magazine-like layout? The only way I am thinking now, is to find a magazine-like theme and make it load only on specific links in the main website menu, the magazine links. This will create a mini-site (magazine site) inside the main site. I do not know if this is the right procedure, but I have used that before to create mini sites for events, under special menu links, inside the major site.

The principle is the same.
Start with making the Parent Registered.
Only edit Global Permissions if you want the Permissions site wide or to allow Admin access
For Components add Permissions per Component
For Categories/Articles add Permissions per Category or per Article

Permissions are inherited so if you wand someone to create and edit Own as well as someone to Create Edit and Publish
Then
New user group 'Cars' with Registered as Parent .... No change Permissions(can be set to specific access/view level if required).
> New user group 'Cars Creator' with 'Cars' as Parent .... inherits login site ... Allow Create and Edit Own (can be set to specific access/view level if required).
>> New user group 'Cars Creator Editor' with 'Cars Creator' as Parent .... inherits Allow Create and Edit Own ... allow Edit State (can be set to specific access/view level if required).
N.B. 'Cars' Can be any name you want.

Or use a 3rd party extension and link with menu items. You can use other menu items to link to Articles.

That's so clear, thanks so much for providing this inheritance structure, this will save me some time!

About the 3rd party extension, you mean find something that can display articles in one category into a magazine format? I haven't found anything like that, or I am not searching well enough. Anything in mind, let me know.

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... portfolio/
They have many demos

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/phoca-gallery/
They also have Templates if you want that route

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... y/sobipro/

Many users like Gantry. I have never used it but many who I respect like Gantry https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... /gantry-5/

You could also use Template overrides and Template layouts on Category blog. Template (Overrides on Category blog) override all Categories. Layout Overrides are controlled in the menu item edit screen.
