Who's Online

Post by ozgoofy » Wed Feb 07, 2018 4:04 am

Hi All,

I have been upgrading my Joomla site for many years ok.
I just upgraded from 3.8.3 to 3.8.4 and now the who's online module showing total visitors not the current ones as in all other versions since 1.5.x

Can some one help?

My host cloudaccess.net can not.

Please clear your site cache and any intermediate CDN cache. After doing that, see if the numbers reported by the Who's Online module have changed.

Are you using a CDN (e.g. Cloudflare)?

Also read the comment from @mbabker about using the database session handler. ;)

Ok, No CDN is being used I am told.

I'm just an end user and don't know all the bit's about how it works.

But I know it's true Joomla keeps getting better and better, however if a slip up in a simple module (in comparison) to others the over site in the "Who's online" module could lead to other parts in the future.

Regards

FYI: after I updated to J! 3.8.5 (and I observed that I had a couple hundred "visitors") it was dead easy to get rid of them. Using phpMyAdmin, delete all the rows in the _sessions table. Personally, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it because, after a couple of days, the entries in that table will delete themselves, anyway. ;)

As far as I'm concerned, the Who's Online might be a "nice" thing to know but (a) it's unreliable, (b) it doesn't actually tell you anything and (c) it's just not worth stressing out about it. However ... I know a lot of people who stress out about the most insignificant little things ... like ... where did I leave my coffee cup?

Thank you for the lack of detailed help. Migrates to Wordpress because there are more helpful people. Joomla + support = goodbye.

As one last follow-up (from me) about the situation with the "high" number of visitors, Akeeba Admin Tools has a Purge Sessions feature.

But, for the definitive explanation on the matter, read viewtopic.php?f=9&t=958979#p3512585

I was very curious about this, so i purged sessions. It fix the problem only for one day. The other day the problem with too many guests exist. I was also try with empty session table, change session handler from database to php and after went back to database, nothing... the same results adter a day. The problem comes when you have in session handler database. If i use session handler for example "redis" i don t have this problem

Where can I verify that these table entries should be deleting themselves and how often?
