Download link for latest version
Hi,
On the Joomla website the download links appears like,
https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla ... format=zip
My question is if there is a symlink somewhere pointing /latest to the above? The obvious idea is that /latest would always point to the latest version regardless of number.
Thanks,

Re: Download link for latest version
I don't see a link to "latest" on that page? Or did I miss something?
I only see links to <version number>.zip, not to "latest".

Re: Download link for latest version
It is always the latest version; why would older versions, possibly with bugs or unmatched security issues, be available on the Joomla website?pappapo wrote:I don't see a link to "latest" on that page? Or did I miss something?

Older releases are available elsewhere if anyone really needs them (if you do them ask where they can be found), but to leave these older versions available on the main website would only cause confusion.

Re: Download link for latest version
This is getting terribly difficult.
I was asking for a *symlink* called *latest* that would always point to the latest release regardless of version number.
Like, if the laster version is 3.8.5, there would be a symlink
latest -> 3.8.5.zip
Then, there is a new release, 3.8.6, the symlink would be
latest -> 3.8.6.zip
So the target of the symlink would change for each new release.
It is a *very* common practice in software development...

Re: Download link for latest version
As others have said, the link you see on downloads.joomla.org will always be the latest release (even if it doesn't state it in black and white). As an observation, I don't see that Wordpress or Drupal, as examples, present their downloads as a "latest version" link as you have described.
In fact, on downloads.joomla.org, you will see a link saying "Latest Release". You could book-mark that page in your browser favourites.
From main Joomla screen, you go to Download & Extend > Joomla Downloads > Latest Release.
https://downloads.joomla.org/latest
I guess that is 50% closer to what you were asking for. .
EDIT: this is the screenshot I meant to add, and this shows "Latest Release" link which goes to the above screen.

Re: Download link for latest version
sorry that no one has understood what you are asking which I assume is so that you can create some automation script.
Unfortunately there is no option for what you are asking. The closest (and not perfect for you) is the link https://www.gitub.com/joomla/joomla-cms/releases/latest which will always redirect to the latest version BUT not a single file as you will see

Yes, it is for scripting - thank you for answering.
Re: Download link for latest version
We actually did put a small script at joomla.org/latest for just this.
With that said though, the concept of "latest" isn't nearly a simple "find highest version number and download" the majority of the time (any time the project is concurrently supporting two version branches, which there were two actively supported branches between 2008 and 2014 and there will be again once 4.0 is released as stable), that's covered in https://github.com/joomla/downloads.joo ... issues/114 and that's why the downloads site doesn't actually have a URI that's a shortcut to download the latest ZIP file for some release channel.

Perhaps https://developer.joomla.org/nightly-builds.html may be of interest to you? Don't think it is for live sites though.

Re: Download link for latest version

Re: Download link for latest version
Some background to my question can be found here:
https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/fre ... 13412.html
So, the situation is that the FreeBSD ports system currently installs
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/archive/3.8.7.zip
But for a CMS,
https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/re ... ackage.zip
(or bz2 or tar.gz)
would be more appropriate.
The former archive would be better suited for development purposes of Joomla itself.
Can someone from the team please confirm right or wrong?
Thanks!

Re: Download link for latest version
I I had a read of the freebsd messages and you are correct it is completely wrong to use that archive in this use case. You are correct that the correct package is the release one
