Author editing published content.

Post by Programit » Sat Aug 18, 2018 3:44 am

I'm setting up a local website which I would like users to be able to submit articles etc and also allow them to update their own articles as well.
All good so far have set permissions on the "author" which basically allows him to edit own. The submit article is only permitted for those with Author or higher group.
The publisher or admin are the only ones that I want to be able to make new or editted item to go live.
The trouble is at the moment, once the original article is live, the author can edit the article from the front end and make any changes they want and it goes live with the changes, where as I thought it should keep the approved article live until the appropriate publisher or admin have approved the changes.
When they first submit the article it works fine, but then anything can be changed afterwards which can lead to obvious problems.
The only permission enabled under Author is Edit own.
Is there any way around this or possible addon I need etc.

When the client updates the article and the newly edited article is to be approved by administrator, could you view the article before change in the site part or by the time the administrator approves the change, there will be nothing?

Not sure exactly what your asking, but when the author submits an article for the first time, it doesn't appear on the live site, but only in the backend waiting to be set to published by admin etc.
Once the article is published it then goes live for the world to see.
Once the original article IS live, the author can come back and edit the article with whatever they want. When they save the edited article with nude photos and obscene dialog, spam etc, it goes live to the world. No further approval required.

I got your problem, I want to know after editing the article, by the time the edit is become approved by administrator, you want people to be able to view article's not edited version on the site part or it becomes unpublished totally?

People can not see the original submitted article until approved by admin. Its unpublished when submitted, waiting for approval.
Article versioning is enabled.
Edits should be waiting for approval while the original stays up.

Create a new user group with Registered as parent.
Set Permissions 'Allow' for Create and Edit Own.

If they can't create then they have no 'Own' to edit !!!

With 'Edit state' not allowed (inherited) ... Their creations will not be published. Nor (afaik) will their edits.

You can change the Permissions in global configuration or per Category. Child Categories inherit the Permissions of their Parent Category.

The problem seems to be that once an article is published, it remains published, even after editing.
When a user edits a version of their article it should be marked as unpublished until admin approval.
The versioning system doesn't seem to take this into account and keeps the article in its approved state.
Even if the permissions are set to not allow change of state, the article is already deemed approved.
Any editing, IMO, should change to Not Approved by default, and keep previous version online until admin etc approves.
The restriction on changing state is irrelevant in this case.
Still looking for a work around. :(

Have reported that Edit state Inherited not allowed is ignored when an Article is edited? https://issues.joomla.org/tracker/joomla-cms/21788

It's unfortunately may be a killer for the site we are developing as it is based around community submissions.
We are looking at some possible hacks but not keen at this stage.
Is there ANY addons that allow user submission with security, IE admin approval and their own upload download area.
Anyway at least I know its not just me..
Thanks for the help anyway.

Unfortunately it has been closed as 'expected behaviour' https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/is ... -414905949 . imho it is a waste of time disallowing 'Edit state' when the edit auto replaces the original.
