Google Analytics Help! It keeps adding code to the front end of my site

I'm trying to add Google Analytics to a new web site - every time I add the code , it messes up the front end by adding code to the top of my page.
I am adding the Global Site Tracking Code (from google analytics) to the header of the the index.php file of my template...I have also tried to add it right before the </body> with similar results.
Is there any other way to get this to work?

You can add code in your body tag

you can add the code at the end of the body tag or use joomla extension search here https://extensions.joomla.org/ theres a lot of extension analytic there
