Database error with new installation

Postby pmottshaw » Sat Aug 12, 2017 5:12 pm

Hello everyone!

I've searched for quite a while for a solution and can't find one. My host isn't being much assistance either.

I'm trying to re-stall a website (using the .jpa file and Akeeba) but am getting this error when I try to reinstall:
No database definitions were found or no database was selected.

I have the correct db name, username and password (I've checked many times) and the user has all the appropriate permissions. I'm using 'localhost' which is correct (I checked with the host).

I have done this many times and have never had an issue.

Anyone have any idea what's happening and any potential solutions?

I had an instance once when localhost wasn't recognised and I had to use 127.0.0.1 instead which worked.Or see https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentat ... abisession

Thank you for the reply, gws. I replaced localhost with 127.0.0.1... didn't work. Thanks for the link. If I can't figure this out, I may need to do a manual installation, which I'm trying to avoid because I've never done it.

Is this site being restored to the same host/same site? Is the JPA backup file from the live hosting or your local host (that is your PC running XAMPP or similar) and are restoring to the live host, or is it from one live host to another?

If from local host (your PC) to live hosting, there might be a difference in database name and username such as adding your hosting user id to the database name like username_db-name or username_db-user where on your local host (PC) you wouldn't need the prefix and simply use db-name, db-user. (In my experience cPanel hosting requires this but it might be a configuration thing depending on the hosting company).

Not saying that is the solution, but I assume you have checked that sort of thing when you have stated the details are correct.

Use a script to check the database connection.
Make sure the folders/files are set correctly and try a different browser.
Test on localhost on your PC

@AMurray: Yes, I am restoring to the same host using a JPA file from the live host. I did check the database name, and the name is correct. I tried another browser. That didn't work.

@Webdongle: I'm not sure what you mean when you say "make sure the folder/files are set correctly." I did try a different browser (safari and chrome) and that didn't help.

Any other suggestions/ideas?

What version of php are you running?
What database connector are you using in joomla (mysql or mysqli)?

Note: In php 7.0 and 7.1 the Mysql connector does no longer exist.

If PHP 4.3.8 is what you are using in this case, see https://docs.joomla.org/Technical_requirements

PHP 4.3.8 ??? That's 15 years old! I'm sure that's a typo......please clarify this.....

You need a minimum php 5.3.10 - but 5.6 or 7.x is recommended.

If your host is still running PHP 4.3.8 ??? ??? then run a mile and get a new host :) 8)
