Joomla update error could not open for writing

Postby gbirk » Tue Feb 13, 2018 2:22 pm

While upgrading to Joomla 3.8.5, I got the following error: Could not open /home/xxxx/public_html/mywebsite/modules/mod_custom.php for writing. I checked, permissions are set to 755 for folders and 644 for files.

The file may have another owner than the user you try to access it with.

How do I check that? This is a development site and the only user is me.

I'm not sure how to post the FPA. I did check the error log and found the following:

[12-Feb-2018 09:18:03 America/Denver] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined method Joomla\CMS\Document\RawDocument::addHeadLink() in /home/xxxx/public_html/mywebsite/modules/mod_search/mod_search.php on line 23

I looked at the code on line 23 in mod_search.php and it reads:

$doc->addHeadLink(

We see this question asked a lot and, until people who post this question figure out the solution, their original questions remain (and will continue to remain) unresolved. So the ball is really in your court.

There must be hundreds of forum topics devoted to this subject: "How to post the FPA". It's not a complicated process. The instructions for how to use it (including pictures that show you what to do) are contained in the topic viewtopic.php?f=621&t=582860

  1. Download a ZIP file
  2. Extract the file fpa-en.php from that file.
  3. Upload the file fpa-en.php to your site root folder (the folder containing the file configuration.php)
  4. Go to the URL <your-site>/fpa-en.php
  5. Click the button "GENERATE POST"
  6. Select the text—the forum BBcode—that you'll see in and paste that text, as you see it, here on the forum.

That's it in a nutshell. It takes about 5 minutes. It probably takes about 10 minutes to read the instructions but, once you know how to do it, it's straightforward.

Whether or not your FPA report will assist others to help you ... that's another matter. Without it, you'll be waiting a long time for someone to answer your original question. 8)
