MySQL versus MariaDB

Post by hehemrin » Mon Jul 22, 2019 9:34 pm

Hi,
My Joomla CP states:
Data base type: mysql
Data base version: 5.5.5-10.3.12-MariaDB-1:10.3.12+maria~bionic

1) I try to understand what this means; is it a MySQL or MariaDB I use?
I try to read and understand about them, and their relationship at various web resources, but I still not feel I fully understand. If someone can answer...?
2) The preliminary requirement for Joomla 4 is MySQL minimum 5.6 (ref: https://developer.joomla.org/news/788-j ... -move.html)
2a) Nothing is said if MariaDB is supported
2b) Will it mean that my current above data base 5.5.5... is preliminary not meeting J4 requirements?
Best regards

Modification of my first question:

1) I have controlled a bit more in detail now, it is a 10.3.12 MariaDB I use. The information about MySQL and 5.5.5 seems then to be added/interpreted by Joomla. Any who can explain?

Second question remains as originally.

@Hehemrin, We use in our global hosting operations on all our servers MariaDB for performance and security reasons. Both current branch (3.x as well as future 4.x) run flawless with MariaDB. Visit any of our sites and see sites running latest Joomla with MariaDB. Note that many very large companies with Large Data run MariaDB such as Google, Craigslist, Wikipedia, Archlinux, RedHat, CentOS, and Fedora. A better article than the referred Joomlashack blog can be found https://webbymonks.com/blog/mariadb-vs- ... omparison/

Thanks for both responses. Indeed promising! The thing I still don't understand, is the MySQL info in Joomla CP, when it is a MariaDB? Do you have it too? Nothing to bother about?

You will have something like (assuming you are up-to-date)
Database Version 5.5.5-10.3.16-MariaDB
This tells you that the MariaDB version is the current forked version equivalent to MySQL 5.5.5

Yes Leo, that is correct (5.3.12 in my case). But if it is forked from 5.5.5, it means it's doubtful if 10.3.12 will be working for Joomla 4, which preliminary requires 5.6 or above. Maybe wait and see, test, and hope it works (and of course the service provider may upgrade version in meantime as well).
