The above screenshots indicate your localhost server is working. Further guidance with XAMPP should be referred to the Apache Friends forum....https://www.apachefriends.org/community.html
  • The next step is to install Joomla. Create a sub-folder in the XAMPP "htdocs" folder. e.g. called "joomla" (or whatever your site name would be). (you would do this for subsequent websites too so each site has its separate folder)
  • In this instance your localhost URL for installing Joomla would therefore be, for example, http://localhost/joomla.
  • Download Joomla installation package (full package) from https://downloads.joomla.org. Extract the Zipped folder of files into the /joomla folder.
  • You need to create a database (in phpMyAdmin). Set the user priviledges for the default "root" user to "all". When the joomla installer asks for it, specify the database name you created, and specify the user as "root" (with no password - or with the password if you have set one up).
  • Continue through the installer, and create the Administrator user when prompted.
  • Refer to the installation instructions here: https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Installing_Joomla for full details of installation.
**Note: if you ever need to update PHP with XAMPP it's a more convoluted process - you need to effectively install XAMPP all over again for the new PHP version.

That means making sure you have a backup of your site (recommend Akeeba Backup - see the extension directory), and Kickstart (to restore the site). Refer https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website.

My advice would be to pursue the use of WAMPServer (http://www.wampserver.com/en/) instead of XAMPP - you can install modules, being different PHP versions without upsetting the entire WAMPServer application. You can then swap between PHP versions if you are doing more comprehensive site testing.

Thanks A Murray this is really helpful.
Is wamp the better version of XAMPP?

I already have my domain; www.mywebsite.ws - question here, if I login to my FTP; I create a folder with joomla.
How can I then call my www.mywebsite.ws; is there a place later where I can define this?

Thank you again

IMO wampserver is more versatile than Xamp.

I use WAMPServer, because of the ability to install multiple PHP versions, allowing you to swap between them quickly and easily (and the only thing that happens to apply the change, is you restart the Apache service (no PC reboot or anything like that).

The main WAMP application is updated from time to time, but not necessary to do so for changing PHP versions. You can also install different Apache versions or MySQL and phpMyAdmin versions - that is a limit of XAMPP where you can't do that without simply installing their latest release.

The site wampserver.com is down, which has rarely happened.

The alternative repository is online at http://wampserver.aviatechno.net/. Read the instructions first by clicking the button 'See installation requirements'.

@toivo: thanks for the direct link to the repository. I totally forget how to create the website before. I just remembered that I had a XAMPP and then that was it. Now I know that I still have the files from my old website in my FTP server. I logged in to the cPanel and I can see Joomla as I packaged. Can I install it directly from my cPanel?

In addition to the files, you also need the database, which normally resides in a database server. If you have backed up the database by using mysqldump, phpMyAdmin or Akeeba Backup, which combines the filesystem and the database into one .jpa file, you would be able to restore the website.

@toivo: To be honest I can't remember if I have backed it up. Currently I have this folder in my FTP server: .httpdocs and I can see a lot of folders in here. I would like to create a new template using Joomla; can you direct me how to restart and use Joomla? If I download Joomla, can I just simply copy it here in this folder httpdocs? Thank you

You need a web server. There are different types of web servers.

The expanded Joomla installation package needs to be stored into the document root of the web server or one of the virtual host or alias folders.

The following tutorial shows how to install Joomla: https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Installing_Joomla

@toivo: thanks for the links. I am currently on this URL now the one you've have shared. and I'm trying to figure out what would be my server? I don't want to install it directly to my FTP server, I would like to try it out first locally. In the instruction it says:
"Move the downloaded Joomla! installation package to the server." - what server can you recommend?

If you have a Windows workstation, Wampserver is the best option.

Right click the Wampserver icon and select Tools - Check state of services. What does it report?

That's good! However, remember the Tools option if the Wampserver icon happens to turn red again.

Make sure you create a folder in Wamp's \www folder and install Joomla in your \www\newfolder

@gws: I have tried the root and without password now it works. But I have assigned a password to my root
How can I put a password on this?
If I enter a password I get the same error message.

If you successfully assigned a password to root it would not work. You do not need a password on a local machine, once you have developed your site and move it to a live server you can easily assign usr and pwd as you wish. I suggest that you use Akeeba to move your dev site to a live site when the time comes.

@gws: Thank you so I have installed it successfully now. I will have to navigate what I can do when I want it to be live
Is it necessary to always remove the installation folder?
So I removed it now when I go to localhost/Joomla - I don't see anything... I just see the following:

You installed without sample data.
Create another folder in Wamp's \www folder and install Joomla (with sample data) into \www\anotherfolder.
Make sure that you use a different name for the database.
The installation (when performed on wamp localhost) will create a database with the name you specify.
