Sample data not working in fresh install!

Post by zamlet » Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:25 pm

Hi,

I am new to Joomla and have installed it on a local machine. During the installation, it offered to download some sample sites for me, and I chose to do so. I now have a link entitled "Sample Sites" toward the top of my home page. That page links to two sample sites, entitled "Australian Parks" and "Fruit Shop". Fruit Shop seems to work fine. But Australian Parks fails with a 404 message.

I have reinstalled Joomla from scratch twice now, cleaning out the database and the site files completely between installations, yet this problem persists. It seems that there is something wrong either with the data for this site or with the process Joomla uses to access it (I can find no folder containing individual files for either of the two sample sites). Is this a known problem? Can anyone suggest a workaround? I'd really like to be able to explore both sample sites.

Below is the FPA information, in case it's useful.

Thanks in advance.

What sample data did you install?

Am not able to replicate with 'Learn' sample data.

Disclaimer: I don't normally install sample data when I create a new J! website. That's not to say there's anything wrong with it but I've been using J! for over a decade and I just don't have any need for it. I haven't tested the "install sample data" feature and I don't know too much about it.

I don't think there's any trick to this. I searched the internet for "Australian Parks" (and J!, of course) and I found a few results. A lot of those results were outdated or didn't work. As a side note, however, there's an interesting comment from @brian on GitHub in connection with J!4. So I really don't know the answer.

I don't want to go on a fishing expedition for this. Rather than query "where you obtained J! from" or "what sample data did you install [when you created your J! website]", from memory I understand there's a feature within the J! control panel that allows people to install the "sample blog" after creating a J! website. Perhaps @Webdongle can correct me but, AFAIK, it should work. ???

The only thing I can be sure about is that the sample data installation feature has been around for donkey's years and most of us who have used J! for a long time probably haven't looked at it. I'm not dismissing it as something that's unimportant; I just haven't looked (sorry). :-[

Perhaps another member of the forum has recently used the sample data installation feature (with Australian Parks) and could comment? It may work; it may work with Protostar; it may work with Beez3. I couldn't tell you. You could try it. :)

No need because it has been asked. Knowing exacly could allow us to replicate.

I often do test install with sample data to try and replicate problems the posters in here have (especially if they are having problems updating from older versions).

In any case like I said "Am not able to replicate with 'Learn' sample data."
We need to know exactly what the OP did during install.

I'm new to Joomla but not to computing in general. I don't remember the exact text of the radio button I checked during installation, and since my installation folder was removed as the final step of installation, I can't easily get back to it without re-installing. But it had the word "Learn" in it, and I think it was the last (bottom-most) button. In case this helps, the home page I get is predominantly white, with a streaky reddish picture just below the title.

I stress that this was not a separate operation, and there's nothing peculiar (that I know of) about my configuration - it was the standard package, downloaded from the standard site, and looked like a standard question asked during installation - do you want this standard sample stuff downloaded or not? I didn't think twice about it and did not anticipate any problems.

It might be an old, way-too-familar package to someone who's been using Joomla for decades now, but it's new to me and not what I expect from something I've done a fresh, out-of-the-box installation of. <soapbox>If the sample data is severely outdated or otherwise defective in some way, perhaps it shouldn't be made available as part of a standard installation?</soapbox>

At any rate, I'd still like to get it working, if that's possible without extreme effort. If I can reinstall the sample data somehow, that might work. The link supplied by sozzled (thanks) suggests I'm not the first to have trouble with it. My own curiosity makes me want to know whether something's just missing, misconfigured somehow, or what, and whether I could have done something differently (other than choosing not to download the sample) to prevent this situation.

I might add that, contrary to the OP of the git page that sozzled linked, one of the two sample sites ("Fruit Shop") seems to work just fine. It's only the "Australian Parks" site that generates the 404 error.

Also, in case it's relevant, the actual text of the 404 error reads, "404 - Category not found".

OK, I decided to do another installation and get a screenshot. Here's how I got the sample data. This was step 3 of a fresh installation. Hope this helps.

Well, I noticed something in the screenshot that I'd overlooked before:

I'm in the US, so I have been using en-US as the default language. As soon as I switched to en-GB, the Australian Parks site suddenly works. But it still completely fails under any other language. So it requires that language to be set in order to work.

So I guess if it's only meant to work under en-GB, then there's no problem. It still seems like there ought to be a more user-friendly way to handle this. But at least now I have my explanation.

As a side note, however, there's an interesting comment from @brian on GitHub in connection with J!4.
That comment looks like a shot in the dark and not applicable in this case.

The FPA results offer clues why the Australian Parks page produces a 404 Not Found error:
SEF ReWrite: false | .htaccess/web.config: No
Even Apache gives a 404 error for Australian Parks if there is no .htaccess file. However, this website does not use Apache, which opens the proverbial can of worms:
Web Server: Abyss/2.12.1-X1-Linux AbyssLib/2.12
@zamlet, please ask your host or someone who knows the Abyss server to enable URL rewriting, if you are keen to get the Australian Parks and similar pages working properly with Search Engine Friendly (SEF) links.

Abyss is not among the web servers supported by Joomla, ref. Joomla Technical Requirements

There are tutorials how to convert the URL rewriting statements:

mod_rewrite conversion

It would probably be easier to use one of the supported web servers, for example Apache or Nginx. The Apache alternative LiteSpeed is not mentioned but it works all right with Joomla.

I've already converted the .htaccess file to Abyss's method of URL rewriting. It's a somewhat laborious process but I'm pretty sure I got it right, as I've done it before. I very much doubt that the .htaccess file or anything to do with Abyss was a factor.

There appears to be some peculiarity in the way Joomla breaks down websites by language. I would have thought that any web page would be available to any viewer in the language in which it was written, even if the page's own buttons are in the viewer's language. Maybe it's set up so that a web page must be specified to work in a given language to appear there?

Or maybe I'm missing the real issue.

Ok, I have not had chance to study Abyss at all. However, the sample data with Australian Parks works all right using Apache and the languages en-GB, en-US and fi-FI. The Park pages are just in English, though.

Follow this tutorial if you would like to set up a multilingual website: Setup a Multilingual Site

Questions about multilingual sites and languages should be posted to the Language - Joomla! 3.x forum.

As sample data is added during installation Then it is added before rewrite is set on in Joomla global Therefore I doubt if rewrite has any influence with the problem.

Just a point about language. Installation chooses language based on browser setting. I had a problem once FF browser set language to English-en and so the first English option showed in the install (en-au). Set browser language from English-en to English-en-gb.

Bottom line check your browser's language setting :D

I'm in the US, so I have been using en-US as the default language. As soon as I switched to en-GB, the Australian Parks site suddenly works. But it still completely fails under any other language. So it requires that language to be set in order to work.
The only thing I can think of, is that the Language Filter Plugin is mistakenly enabled on a single language site. The sample data is single language. Then the category will not be found if it's tagged to 'en-GB'.

Note: J4 will be shipped with two new sets of sample data, a single language blog and a multi-language site.

I guess Per is right. No idea why the Park categories were set to en-GB in that sample data, but indeed this would create an issue if the languagefilter plugin is Enabled.

I'm still new to Joomla. Where would I find this language filter plugin and how can I adjust its settings? Is this something I could have or should have done differently during installation?
