Joomla-3-Upgrade impossible

Post by Luna03 » Fri May 14, 2021 8:02 pm

There is still Joomla 2.5.18 installed and I would like to upgrade it to Joomla 3.9.26. Under Joomla Update it shows me that there is no updade available because I am already on the latest version.
Than I tried it under extensions with all three modes: Upload Package File, Install from Directory, Install from Url. Nothing worked. I tried to intall the upgrade package Joomla! 3.9.26 Upgrade Package (.zip), Joomla! 3.9.26 Upgrade Package (.tar.gz) and Joomla! 3.9.26 Upgrade Package (.tar.bz2). My PHP version is 5.6. Than I changed to PHP version 7.4, where my backend didnt't work properly anymore, and tried it again without success.
How can I upgrade my Joomla? Or do I have to uninstall and install it newly?

You cannot "upgrade"—technically, it's called a migration—directly from J! 2.5.anything to J! 3.9.26 and you certainly cannot use PHP 7.anything with J! 2.5. So you need to understand that first. The migration involves several stages.

There is a migration guide on this forum to help people migrate from J! 2.5 to J! 3.x and you should read that: viewtopic.php?f=710&t=793171.

The very first thing you need to do is update from J! 2.5.18 to J! 2.5.28.

The whole process—to go from J! 2.5.18 to J 3.9.26 and patch up/replace/remove any incompatible extensions that you may have installed—will probably take you several days. Good luck. :)

Alternatively (and it may be quicker) pay a professional developer to do the job for you or start again/rebuild your website with a supported version of J! 3.

Rebuild is probably the easiest/quicker method. https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/j2xml/ can help Transfer Articles, users et. Then all you need to do is fine extensions that match the ones of the old site.

That is nonsense sorry. Why wasting a perfect running site by rebuilding it where it takes an hour or 2 to migrate the stuff?

That is nonsense sorry it takes longer than that to migrate from that far back.

@Webdongle...maybe a few hours more but still it goes relatively quick. And no difference with any Joomla 2.5-version. First to the latest Joomla 2.5.28 or so and then disabling all non-compliant (to J3) extension and run any migrator. That all does not take a lot of time. What is next is a question whether the user wants to keep as such the old version or modernize the website which will take time

As you are very well aware Kevin, we migrate quite a lot of Joomla 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5 to Joomla 3.x so we well know where we talk about me believe

Yeah I would too if I was getting paid for it. From a 1.0.x, 1.5.x or 2.5.x often it is still quicker to rebuild as menus need to be rebuilt and alternative extensions and templates need to be found.

@Webdongle and @leolam: save your argument for another time. The OP logged in for fifteen minutes two weeks ago and hasn't been sighted since. :D

@sozzled
The op may still be reading the thread as well as others. By two volunteers discussing the issue it gives users different perspectives. One perspective from someone who could gain a customer when a user fails to do it the difficult way and another perspective from someone who has nothing to gain.

Yes horses for courses. Some need a professional service others need a less expensive option. And both types of users come here for help.
