All I get is "Error" Joomla 3.9.27/Ubuntu Server 20.04 Topic is solved

Hi there, it has been quite a while; last time I was using 1.6, lol.

Since there isn't a guide that I could find for all command line, I used this guide here (about step 5 on down):

What's weird is I got the Joomla install page once, but I was at work and didn't want to finish it. Figuring that it may be a security problem, I deleted the 'joomla' folder and then got sidetracked on apache .conf files. Plus, that guide had me installing a slightly older version. I did not do anything but download and unzip the installation to the 'joomla' folder that I remember.

However, after a full clean install of everything from the OS on up (a couple of times) when I try again, all I get is a page that says "Error" in the upper left hand corner. Tried the permissions, nope. Created the joomla.conf file, nope. When I edit the ServerName to my URL, then it still errors into an endless loop in multiple 'installation' sub-folders. All this while using the 3-9-27 file instead of the 3-9-26 in the guide.

Me stumped. Everything else works. Could it possibly be a bad Joomla 3-9-27 file?

To clarify, all I get is a blank white page that says "Error". Go to my page. See the specs. info.php is viewable as is ted.servepics.com/joomla

I'm sorry for you that all you see is a "blank white page that says 'Error'". A lot of people get this and they come to the forum and write "All I get is a blank white page that says 'Error'". Have you searched the forum for the term "blank white page"? search.php?keywords=white+page+error&te ... mit=Search

I went to your "page" but I see nothing.

Have a look at some of the search results. There are probably as many reasons why there are "blank white pages with 'Error'" on them as there are people who use this forum. We don't know why this is the case in your situation, sorry.

I don't know anything about installing J! from a CLI on Ubuntu, sorry. I just install J! by running the installation script on the web server.

Well, you got me. I only looked at the top page here. Thank you for the search term. For the readers, I installed Apache2.4.x, PHP 7.4.2, MariaDB 10.x.x which, except for Maria is all obvious from the posted info.php. I edited my last post to make what I see a link.

Do you know how to provide us with easy-to-read technical specs about your environment? Have you heard about the Forum Post Assistant diagnostic tool? I'm not saying that it's a panacea for everything. It's just a suggestion to consider.

OK, after I fixed up the link (http://ted.servepics.com/joomla/installation/index.php) I see what's going on.

The installation didn't complete. As I wrote earlier, I don't know anything about installing J! using a CLI. I just install J! the "normal" way.

There's an easier way to provide us with the technical specs about your environment.



UPDATE: The link to info.php tells us you're using PHP 7.4.3 with adequately resourced memory, execution time, POST quotas. What about the server software (e.g. Apache, Nginx ...) and database engine?

See, I'm not giving you a hard time. I'm just helping you to understand how to get to the nub of the issue.

OK, fixed. And so sorry that I assumed a couple of things. I especially left out the fact that this install is going on a spare box at my house, pure ubuntu server 20.04, no GUI. So going to 'localhost' is out. One other thing, I didn't realize the forum tool, it has been over ten years since my last visit, but at looking at it, it may not be compatible since I am using Apache 2.4.x?

OK, here's my fix, and thanks again so much for the correct search term and link:

In the first hit for the forum here I went and changed two setting(s) in my php.ini file, after backing it up of course, related to error reporting.
display_errors = ON
error_reporting = Xall

Then when I went to the installation page I got a message "Call to undefined function Joomla\CMS\Language\simplexml_load_file(): . . ."

Using that whole line as a search term, I was brought back to a thread at this very site (but of course) that took me to check my php installation via a php -m command. Well, SimpleXML wasn't in that list. In fact there were a few not there, curl was missing too. So, I installed the missing stuff and then executed a sudo systemctl restart apache2 and BAM! Since I am at work, I again disabled access, this time by using sudo ufw deny http.

You are serving (hosting) on a local network and not serving (hosting) to the web. Therefore your setup is localhost. Glad you got it fixed.
