Joomla installation in sub-folder

Hello,
I have the production site installed in the root of domain for some years and it works correctly (Joomla 3.10.6).
I decided, however, to create a new and more appealing site.
I created in the root a folder, for example "newsite", and I installed a complete joomla template to modify according to my needs.
The setup worked correctly and on the administrator side everything works properly.
The problem arises when I try to open the site https://mydomain/newsite; for example the home page does not display images and if I click on a menu item the page opens with 404 error.
Does anyone have an idea and can help me?

Do you use an Apache webserver? Joomla has a htaccess.txt that you could rename to .htaccess to override some server settings (like SEF URLs).

Does your "newsite" folder contain a .htaccess or a htaccess.txt ?

Does your root folder contain a .htaccess that interferes with the "newsite" website?

Have you inspected the HTML source of your "newsite" homepage to see how the links to the missing images look?

Could you run the Forum Post Assistant in your "newsite" folder?

might be you make some configuration wrong? check configuration files for tmp and log files and images folder too ,

try to right click and find the path of image and see does the path actually is correct

Best not nest Joomla sites. If your Hosting package allows it,:
Create a folder in the htdocs (www) folder
Move your main site to that and point the Domain to that folder
Create another folder in the htdocs (www) folder and move your test site to that
Create a subdomain and point it to the folder that has the test site.

You can also create your test site on your computer with a virtual host like Wamp (mamp on a mac)
