Site not loading without using index.php Topic is solved

Hello Joomla community!

I cloned a live site here https://www.nemgtr.org into a new site - got the database and config file customized, but when I go to the first url listed below I get an error message...if I add index.php on the end it works. I searched and searched, but none of the fixes worked

I noticed when clicking the link on the admin page at the very top right of the page (to open the site in a new window, it does not have the "https://" in the link and it opens the page (without the index.php) and shows that it's "Not Secure"

I wonder if these tow things are working together to make a less than favorable outcome...how do I change that link at the top right of the admin page?

I believe that there is a file named index.htm or default.htm in the directory where Joomla is installed. If it exists, rename the file (to something like myindex.htm or mydefault.htm) and test.

You can't just add folder. You should make subdomain on your server first.

I did that already. The site is loading, just have to add the index.php. It's something that is wrong with the htaccess file or something not configured correctly in the database

Thanks for your reply, I already found this proposed solution in a different post, and it is unrelated to my query. There are no other index.html files in there.

Oddly enough, when I checked the site this morning the url in question loaded properly!!

But still, when I click the link at the top right of the admin page (to open the front end of the site in a new window) it loads without the https:// and shows a "Not Secure" icon to the left of where the url shows in the url field in my browser... strange. That must be in the database that got pulled over? But where do I fix that?

Does the website use the standard .htaccess file that was installed with Joomla 3 as htaccess.txt or have some lines and redirections been added to it? The HPPTS protocol can be configured in the Global Configuration, without any additions to the .htaccess file.

Check the file configuration.php in the main Joomla folder. Does the variable $live_site have a value, instead of an empty string, as it should have, similar to this line:

Thanks for the reply! The htaccess file is one that comes with the Joomla original install, and the configuration file has the correct variable for the live_site...

I need to close this thread. I will give a solution/not solution here. The messed up thing I had to deal with was a result of constantly updating/upgrading this pos software for over a decade. the files and bad files and bunked database accumulated to the point of breaking.

I was able to get the site cloned again, but with major lifting. I know...this wouldn't have happened had I known what I was doing all these years...I got smart and moved over to WP for CMS sites.

In trying to clone this site, then upgrade to J4 is still an on-going project. The first attempt failed. For whatever reason, and I followed the instructions carefully.

MY ADVICE to those who are trying to do the same thing...INSTALL J4 FRESH and start over. DON'T try and migrate. just don't!
