Help installing Joomla 3.8 on CentOS 7.5

First, I've installed literally dozens of copies of Joomla 2 thru 3.x. I've never had a problem. It's my own server, so I don't have to worry about CPanels or Admin rights. Let me explain what I've done.

Installed the latest release of CentOS, plus all updates. Installed PHP 7.0. Created a SMF Forum, no problem. (so Apache, MySQL and PHP are fine).

Unzipped Joomla files to a folder \var\www\foldername. Chmod folder 755. Chown -R apache:apache. I logged in as root. (don't tell me I shouldn't. I know!). Created a database in MySQL. I have a username that has ALL Rights to EVERYTHING in MySQL.

Fine. I load my browser put in the http:\\folder.xxx.com (exactly the same procedure that I've done many times before and it was the same for the SMF Forum, so the DNS isn't a problem).

Everything waits for a bit then I get a blank page with a single word - 'Error' in the top LH Corner. I checked properties but so far the problem eludes me. It's either in PHP 7 or CentOS 7.5, because. a few weeks ago, I installed the same Joomla (there's been one update since) on CentOS 7.0 with PHP 5.6 (I think) and it all worked fine.

I see you are using PHP Version: 7.0.30

Have you tried upgrading that?

Everything running fine here on PHP 7.1.7 ...
