restore Joomla installation Topic is solved

Hi. I've had a massive failure of my joomla based website. Can't even get in to the backend to edit the site.
If this has been answered elsewhere. please point me in the right direction.
I have a recent backup off line with Akeeba, and have also downloaded the MySQL data base.
I've tried Akeeba quickstart, but it does nor seem to go to completion after the files are restored. I may be doing something wrong!
The only way forward I can see is to do a new installation, setup Akeeba and then try a restoration from within, but have loads of questions before I start, I don't want to make matters worse!
Should I wipe the old files from public_html before I start to do a clean install?
Will the new installation pick up the old MySQL data or does that need to be re-installed?
Any help please.

Do you mean Akeeba Kickstart? Please copy and paste the error messages here, especially if you cannot find any answers by searching, for example from the Akeeba documentation at https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation.html or their tickets at https://www.akeebabackup.com/support/si ... ckets.html

If you do a clean install and even if you restore the site from Akeeba .jpa file(s) with Kickstart, copy the files to a clean folder, otherwise the behaviour of the site can be unpredictable.

A new installation creates its own database, but it would be possible to switch the database connection to the old database. It may work or not work, depending on what happened to the old database, because the database is your site, and some damage may be rather tricky to repair. It is always better to make regular, scheduled backups and be able to restore a consistent set of files and database, known to be working.

Thank you for your continuing support. Yes, I did mean Kickstart. (shows my ignorance, site setup for a church and I took over the maintenance!)
I gather from what you said that Abeeka backup does not actually backup the content of the site, only the Joomla program files. Am I correct?
Also, when you say "copy the files to a clean folder" - Joomla is created in a folder "public_html". Can I just rename that and create a new "public_html" folder.

Cheers. Akeeba Backup backs up the whole site, meaning the filesystem, consisting of the installed Joomla files and the database, which include all the database tables created by Joomla and third party extensions.

It may be better to create a subfolder and copy the old files there and then clean the public_html folder and avoid possible issues with folder permissions.

When you say, "A new installation creates its own database", would it be better to let that happen & then import the present saved database into the new one, or would an Abeeka restoration after a clean installation populate the new database as well as restoring the original site structure?

To go back to your comment "A new installation creates its own database", I have some conflicting information. In an installation tutorial from www.siteground.com they state that you need to create your database before beginning the installation, and then enter the details of the database when prompted during the installation proceedure. Can you clarify this please?

That is right, if you install a new site, you need a new database. As simple as that. Alternatively, drop the old tables and use the old database.

If I create a new database (to protect the integrity of the old one) how easy is it to switch back to the old one after installation? Is it just a matter of editing a configuration file (e.g. configuration.php). Do you know of a tutorial somewhere that covers this?

Thanks. Can I run this rescue scenario before you before I go ahead.

• Move all old Joomla installation to another folder and ensure public_html is empty

• Create a new data base on server,noting name etc.

• Upload and create new Joomla installation, pointing to new database. Include sample files so that I can check the installation works.

• Assuming I can now get into the backend, call up Abeeka and do a restortation from Abeeka backup.

Is there anything I have missed or got wrong?

Hi. This is just to report a successful restoration of my site.
For anyone with similar problems reading this the one thing I learnt late on in my efforts, and not at all obvious, was to do with using Akeeba Kickstart to restore the site. In the process one has to fill in details about the mySQLi database. You need to identify the database server and not leave at at the recommended default of "localhost". Simple? Yes! but not so obvious to newbies like myself.
