Joomla!/kunena and WordPress under the same domain

Post by Ironside » Thu Apr 04, 2019 3:28 am

This is a little bit complicated but I hope I can explain myself so you understand what I am talking about.

I have a website containing lots of articles and also kunena forum. For the sake of brevity we will call this www.domain.com. The forum is obviously www.domain.com/forum. What I want to do is take the main articles on www.domain.com which used a Joomla! platform and put them onto a WordPress platform. The WordPress platform will be under the same domain name. So then my dilemma is how do I keep using my kunena forum? The easiest way is to create a subdomain, for instance, forum.domain.com. However, that means all my indexed URLs leading to the forum on Google will be completely lost. Obviously, in order to have kunena you also have to have a complete Joomla! installation.

Does that make sense?

Sounds utterly counterproductive to me.

WordPress ticks so many more boxes than Joomla which is why I want to put to all my articles on the the WordPress platform but unfortunately, I still need Joomla! because kunena is not a stand-alone program and obviously won't work with WordPress either.

The dilemma I have is a lot of traffic coming through my forum in the form of search engine queries. However, the physical presence on the forum has gone very quiet in the last two or three years. The really is not much activity at all when it comes to people posting messages and asking questions. I'm afraid it's very much money orientated when it comes to this particular website. This particular website brings in 99.9% of my AdSense earnings. It's also the account holder for my AdSense program so I need it.

Mind you, AdSense earnings have dropped so much in the last couple of years that I barely make it into three digits each month nowadays. What I might do is my the bullet, remove the forum altogether and just keep the domain so I can keep AdSense running and hope that the articles themselves can keep bringing in the money. It's either that or the easy way and install a Joomla! website with the forum on a subdomain and keep the main articles on the main domain but with well processed which would mean that the URLs don't change. I don't suppose it would take that long for Google to index the forum messages again.
