HTTP ERROR 500 after update to Joomla 3.9.27

Post by buchholzf » Wed Jun 02, 2021 3:54 pm

Today I tried to run an update on my site https://landfrauenhd.de/ (running with template Protostar) but failed.
I still can login and run the administrator page but the site itself is dead.

Any help?

This is what I did:

1) Create Akeeba backup
-> ok

2) Update PHP from 7.3 to 8.0.2
-> ok

3) Clean cache
-> ok, site is up an running

4) Live update Joomla from 3.9.16 to 3.9.27 (which triggered another backup beforehand)
-> I lost the internet connection at 86,3%.
Now the site showed HTTP ERROR 500.
I still have access to the administrator page, therefore I first checked the database:

5) Extensions -> Manage -> Database
-> shows a couple of errors

6) In that page I used "Fix database"
-> ok, the errors are gone

Version of the database schema (in #__schemas): 3.9.27-2021-04-20
Update version (in #__extensions): 3.9.27
Database driver: mysqli
187 database changes were checked.
216 database changes had no effect on the structure of the database tables and were therefore skipped.

7) Test https://landfrauenhd.de/
-> failed, still shows HTTP ERROR 500

8) Test https://landfrauenhd.de/dummy
-> surprisingly this is somehow ok, as I got the 404 error page which included the overall layout with heading, colors and title pictures of the site.

9) Now I downloaded Joomla manually and started manual update which quickly went to 86,3% continued and ended shortly after that.
-> ok, I got a nice success message but a couple of warnings of this type:
Update of Manifest-Caches failed: The extension „plg_content_fields“ is not installed yet.

10) Test https://landfrauenhd.de/
-> failed, still shows HTTP ERROR 500

11) Test https://landfrauenhd.de/dummy
-> failed, and surprisingly the response is different than before:

Internal Server Error

You have a partial update due too your lost internet connection. Clear your web space. Restore your akeeba backup and try again

Thank you Brian! ... even if that are quite bad news.

You can restore your backups on any server, even a different one than the one you took your backup on. Follow our video tutorial. You will need to download Akeeba Kickstart Core (free of charge) to extract the backup archives, just like the tutorial tells you to do.

Uff, that's a huge task i.e. if I have to transfer 3.32 GB backup files twice. I wonder if I could avoid that e.g. this way:

1. Create new folder /www/LandFrauenHD2021

2. Create a new database

3. Using webftp on the server copy both backup files site-landfrauenhd.de-20210602-111006-WzSGd-gvrYEP80So.j01 and site-landfrauenhd.de-20210602-111006-WzSGd-gvrYEP80So.jpa to new folder

4. Upload kickstart.php to the same folder

5. Run restore as described in the video (using the new database)
http://<subdomain>.1blu.de/LandfrauenHD2021/kickstart.php

-> Bad luck: Here I get an Internal Server Error as well. I cannot start the restore program this way.
...
Surprisingly it worked after some time (I've not the faintest idea what is going on... Anyway, let's try it.)

6. Test the restored site via the provider domain

7. Change the domain of my site to point to the new folder

8. Keep the old folder for a while until everything is stable, than remove old folder and old database

Ok, now I'm back on Joomla 3.9.16 but still get the same HTTP ERROR 500

PHP-Version 8.0.2
Webserver Apache
PHP-Interface für den Webserver cgi-fcgi
Joomla!-Version Joomla! 3.9.16 Stable [ Amani ] 10-March-2020 15:00 GMT
Joomla!-Plattform-Version Joomla Platform 13.1.0 Stable [ Curiosity ] 24-Apr-2013 00:00 GMT

Next try is to downgrade PHP-Version to 7.4.11 - success!

PHP 8.0.0 was released in November 2020, so your joomla 3.9.16 (March 2020) or various extensions would not have supported PHP 8 at that time.

I'm not sure when the first php 8 compatible Joomla 3.9.x came out, but it was later than 3.9.16.

There is no J! 3.x version guaranteed to be fully compatible with PHP 8 (and there probably never will be). J! 3.9.27, without any third-party extensions, is mostly compatible with PHP 8 (as far as we know) but many third-party extensions are not compatible with the latest versions of PHP.

so simply you have one or more extensions that are not compatible with PHP 8. Only way to find out which one is the culprit is to disable one by one so you will find out which one (or ones) are bugging you (start with your template! Disable and set to Default Joomla template just to figure out)

That article is completely insufficient and does not cover the spectrum of issues/solutions (sorry Michael) I don't understand why that has been locked instead keeping it open for improvements since the basics are ok

Thanks, Leo. It's not an article; it's a forum post and, of course it cannot do justice to the millions of possible causes of these errors. I think it's good that the topic you mention is locked because, if it wasn't, it could go on and on and on ... neverending.

My forum post was never meant to be comprehensive. It's just a few tips about the common source(s) of these problems and gives some advice about what people can do. It's not meant to be a panacea for everything. 8)
