Article ordering

Post by mnxfiles » Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:22 pm

Dear Joomla Experts

I have a lot of articles which represent different marine species. Each article has its own assigned image. These are ordered within different sub-categories corresponding to different species groups.

In the main category I have now managed to show all the articles (pictures) of all the species. But I would like the articles to be displayed in their respective sub-category groups. Right now it is just one long list.

This is how it is displayed as one long list: http://descna.com/en/speciesrecords/crustaceans

This is an example of how I would like it to be displayed: http://apieceofnature.eu/carnivorous-pl ... era-sundew

I have tried almost every menu option but with no luck.

Any help will be much appreciated

kind regards
Martin

I'm not sure I completely understand your question about article ordering.

Yes, you can categorise article, i.e. set up categories for different species in your situation. You can also assign images to articles and categories using the "Images and Links" feature: see https://docs.joomla.org/Help39:Content_ ... _and_Links

The way you display those articles or categories of articles depends on how you create menu items for those things. You could, for example, have a category list view that would list other sub-categories and articles within those sub-categories. See https://docs.joomla.org/Help39:Menus_Me ... st_Layouts

I'm not sure about how you might want to order the categories and/or articles within them. You could, for example, list them in alphabetical order if you want.

Dear Sozzled

Thank you for replying. I am sorry I have not made myself clear. It is not that easy to explain.

I will try with an example. At the moment I have a category named "crustaceans". Within this category I have some sub-categories: Eg "shrimps", "sea spider" and "other". All my articles within these subcategories have an assigned image representing that species/article.

Now I would like to show my main category "crustaceans" as I do here: http://descna.com/en/speciesrecords/crustaceans.

But I would like to show it with its subcategories and the articles (species) within each subcategory. Eg I would like all shrimps to be shown in the section "shrimps" and all "others" to be shown in the section for "others".

Right now it is possible to have the text for each sub-category to be shown. But all the article images just comes in the end as one long list and not within each sub-category?

I hope this made it more clear. Thanks again.

In this example: http://apieceofnature.eu/en/carnivorous ... era-sundew
the main category is sundews. In this there are sub-categories eg "fork-leafed", "Petiolaris complex" etc and each article is displayed under its corresponding sub-category. This was, however, made with an extension that does no longer exist and I have previously been told to use the build-in joomla features.

Kind regards
Martin Nielsen

Set the Category Sort Order in the Menu Item and all articles from one category will be listed contiguously.

Dear Per

Thank you for your reply. I have tried what seem like every possible combination of sorting in the menu item but still without luck. Seems like what I need is for to be able to set the article order to "category" or something similar. I can still only get all articles to be listed as one long list and not within their respective sub-category. But seems like others are facing the same challenge without a solution unfortunately. The layout I would like is:

Category
- category text

Sub-cat 1
- All sub-cat 1 article pictures.

Sub-cat 2
- All sub-cat 2 article pictures.

etc

Kindly
Martin

You have to do an layout override to output the category headings.

Have you set Category Title to show in the Menu Item?

You will not get the headings, but you can see which category the article belongs to.
