temporarily disable back end permissions

Post by Thomsterdam » Thu Nov 14, 2019 3:46 pm

Hi there,
I am super user of a website that needs an update (minor restructuring) tomorrow. I have notified the back end users, but you know how these things work, email not read, forgotten about it, etc.

So I want to disable the accounts of the other users (authors, editors, publishers) temporarily, so they can't get into the back end for the time I am doing the update.
There are some 70 people with back end access.

What would be the easiest (as in: least work for me) to do this? Of course I would still need to have access to do the work

Thanx,

Thom

hi there,
I'm afraid that is not going to work. We have some 2300 users who should all be able to log in at the front end including the ones who have back end access. So I only want to disable their back end access.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Global config >>> Permissions ... change back end logins for the groups. Permissions are Hierarchical.

@Webdongle's idea has some merit but it may be a bit complicated. Another idea (which is simple and takes a few minutes' work) is to install an extension like AdminExile or JUBlockIP or Akeeba AdminTools (and there are several others) that "hide" your admin backend.

Basically, everyone knows that you can login to the backend of a J! website by entering the URL. But what if that URL didn't take you to the login screen? The plugins I've mentioned require you to enter the URL like this mydomain.com/administrator?secret-key. If you are the only one who knows the "secret key" then only you will be able to login. Just make sure that, after you've finished whatever it is you're doing, you remove the secret-key. OK?

@Sozzled

We have worked with Akeeba Admin Tools in the past, so I have re-installed that one. It is a quick fix.

Create a new group with backend permissions. Add yourself to the group. Remove backend permissions from other groups.

The issue may be resolved, but just to point out, that authors/editors can also log in the front-end with their full content creation/editing permissions, so how does blocking the back-end access prevent them from doing any editing of articles in the front-end?

It makes more sense to take the site offline completely (off line mode in Global config) so everyone sees the login form (which I thought only allowed Super User access).
