new site with link to old site

Post by BruderB » Thu May 13, 2021 1:30 pm

Hello Joomlaists,

since years I use Joomla for a private homepage and I am very grateful for the work of the community!

Now I have an idea and do not know how to realize it:

My homepage should be redesigned (with new template) and contain a link to the old page, which should remain completely intact (with old template). I have only one domain name and that should remain so.
My first idea is to install a second Joomla instance, but is this a best-practice? How would you go about it?

Thanks for suggestions,

B.

In these circumstances, a better way is to design & develop the revised/improved site on a local PC/laptop environment and once satisfied transfer the site to the hosting environment.

You could use the extension such as Akeeba Backup to take a back-up of the site, transfer the backup file, and then restore the site using the utility provided by the back-up extension developer. For example, the Akeeba Backup extension developer has created an utility named kickstart.php to restore the site.

Review of the documents https://docs.joomla.org/Setting_up_your ... evelopment and https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website would be of help.

Note: Personally I like wamp server as you could configure it with the versions of PHP, MySQL, and possibly the Web Server to suit the hosting environment.

OK, fine. Thank you both.
At the end, it's not the question of where to have a development environment and how to transfer from development to production. It's my own lamp-server I run the old site with Joomla.

To avoid unwanted effects by using one Joomla instance for two sites, I now simply put a second Joomla instance in the webspace and built a second DB. This is perhaps not elegant, but leads to the goal.

Yes, you can do multiple joomla installations/separate sites - just put each in a sub-folder within the same hosting space:

site-url/site1
site-url/site2

and so on.
