Problem logging into back end

Post by rob-h » Thu Jan 13, 2022 1:00 am

Hi

Without my having done anything, I find I cannot log in to the back end.

Joomla 3.8.8 installed originally, but upgraded to 3.9.8 (this may have been automatic - sorry, can't see setting now, but I may have allowed automatic upgrades).

The site is still up.

The error displayed on attempting login is:

-------------------------------
An error has occurred.
0 Call to a member function format() on null
Return to Control Panel
-------------------------------

Changing the PHP version from the current 7.3 to 7.2, 7.1, 7.0, before returning to 7.3 had no effect.

The error.php file in public_html/administrator/logs has multiple lines such as below generated at each failed login (though this isn't displayed when attempting login). The username and password were last used 2-3 weeks earlier and have not been changed.

-------------------------------
2022-01-12T22:39:22+00:00 INFO 82.45.152.152 joomlafailure Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet.
-------------------------------

The installation is basic, uses the standard Protostar template, and does not include any extensions.

Here's the FPA information:

If you see that

An error has occurred.
0 Call to a member function format() on null
Return to Control Panel

Probably you are already connected to backend but some module, plugin etc that runs in that page is incompatible with your current version.

After logging in and seeing this error, try end navigate on a second tab to: yoursite/administrator/index.php?option=com_modules&view=modules&client_id=1

and try disabling one by one each module and check back to the previous tab with a refresh if the problem is solved.

another thing that you can do is from configuration.php, set error reporting to "maximum" and check the page again to see a more detailed error

The session path is not writable! It must be contact your host.

I don't see any third party extensions listed in the FPA - unless you have run the FPA and excluded such extensions? Looks like a plain vanilla install (albeit 3 years out of date (3.9.8 is from June 2019) but otherwise looks to me like a healthy install.

I'd enable Debug, also by turning on the option in configuration.php

Also just for the record, you should really be using PHP 7.4 or 8.x as 7.3 is now at EOL and when this error is fixed, update to 3.10.4 as that is the latest 3.x joomla release from December 2021.

Thanks v much Pnkr. No, not logged in anywhere it seems, and URL not reachable. But helped me exclude a possibility.
In the end, after a lot of wasted time, I've given up on this hosting company, who in any case, with this package, don't provide the PHP 8+ needed for Joomla 4+, and moved to one that should be a lot better.

Thanks again Pnkr. I edited configuration.php, but found the old configuration was locked in place by this hosting company. I could have asked support to enable the edited file, but as noted previously, there were other reasons to move from this hosting company to one that should be much better, and after spending far too much time on the various problems, that's what I've done. Thanks GWS. That's a great spot! In fact, I spent a lot of time on this and some other problems encountered, mainly due to the hosting set up which we'd been on for a while. Together, the issues led me to move to a different hosting company who (from their website) put much more effort into getting their Joomla environment right. Thanks for looking at this - it's really positive to be able to call on advice from experts - without which you're left with often indifferent or out of date advice from a variety of sources. Rob

Thanks v much A Murray.

I edited a copy of configuration.php, but found that I couldn't enable it without the help of hosting support. That would have been fine if it wasn't for a number of other issues that related to the hosting package we were on. Those included that PHP 8+ was not available, therefore, I could not upgrade at any time to Joomla 4+. I was given a tempting offer to upgrade our hosting package (which we'd been on for a few years), but the other issues have persuaded me to move to a new host which advertises its suitability for Joomla.

Thanks for the advice. The forum help isn't often needed by most site managers, but when someone is stuck, it means they're not on their own, which is really great!

Cheers, Rob

PHP 8 is recommended for Joomla 4.x but it is guaranteed to run on PHP 7.2.5 and above.
