Joomla Site Crashed

I have a client that I host a Joomla site for. I have no idea what version they have it updated or anything about the site. The contacted me to say that the site is down. I tried to log into the control panel and can't get into it or get anything other than the information below. Does anyone have suggestions on where to start? I use mostly Wordpress for my other sites but the customer insisted on using Joomla and I'm at a loss.

The call stack shows that an attempt to login to the back end of Joomla failed and the log plugin is unable to write an entry into the log file. Has something been changed in the web server? Writing a log file is a normal operation that should work.

Are you sure the login credentials were correct? Is there someone else who has Super User access to the back end?

The server hasn't changed but I can't say the same for Joomla. The person that has been running the site (I merely host the site for them and they have always done ok... until it crashed) says she hasn't changed anything and the site was up and running just last week.

She assures me that the login and password she gave is correct. As for a Super User, I don't know. She said she is the only one who has backend access.

I also checked the admin username and password which is correct but won't log me in. I had to back up the PHP to 7.0 in order to get a screen that would allow me to enter the user name and password to get into the console but I get the original error displayed when I hit enter

I would say the main issue is the old PHP version you're having to use, likely due to the old version of Joomla installed (Joomla v3.6.2 as reported by the FPA). The site should be using at least 3.10.11 and PHP 8.0 or 8.1, depending on the extensions being used. Also I think PHP settings could be tweaked such as PHP memory limit to 128M or higher. That said, Joomla 3.6.2 should run on early PHP 7 versions (since that support was added in Joomla 3.5)

As per the FPA, Session Path Writable: "No" should be "Yes".

Eventually, you (or site owner) may find that J3 extensions start becoming rarer as J4 becomes the dominant version, with J3 running out of support in August 2023. It might be fine for a few years following that but will eventually hit a time where like Joomla 2.5 and 1.5 before it, it's no longer serviceable.

The FPA report shows the sub folder logs in the main Joomla folder with permissions 755, which they should be. The trouble is that Joomla 3.6 attempts to write log entries into the folder administrator/logs, which the FPA report shows with ---, meaning that either the folder does not exist or its permissions are not set. Fix that issue and the error message should disappear.

You could also change the log path in the Global Configuration to point to 'logs', instead of 'administrator/logs', if that is easier. Check the previous setting and make sure that the full path is there.

I have tried to add the folder "logs" to the administrator folder but it's not working and I don't have "global configuration" file to edit to change the path.

Where do I find "url fopen" and "session path" so I can make the changes to them?

I appreciate all the help. I don't work in Joomla at all and am just trying to help the site owner out of a jam.

Global Configuration is accessed from the back end of Joomla by going to http://example.com/administrator - replace example.com with the domain name of the website.

If you manage to login to the back end but PHP fatal errors stop Joomla from going further, the only way to fix the path to the log folder is by editing the file configuration.php in the main Joomla folder. Look for a line like this, where the part marked as 'something' is unique to your website. That entry is the full path to the current log folder, which we would like to change to a folder that is write-enabled:

Change the text by removing the text 'administrator/', make sure nothing else is changed and save it then:

If you cannot login to the back end of the website because of incorrect login credentials, ask the website owner and if that does not help, follow the earlier instructions to set up a new Super User account.

The important directives url_allow_fopen and session_save_path are in the php.ini and presumably only the hosting provider can change them.

The only thing close to that line in the config.php file is:

As for access to the backend of Joomla, if I try to login I get nothing but the errors, here is what comes up rather than logging me in:

The only thing close to that line in the config.php file is:

The $log_path above ends in index.html, which is not a folder but a file. In addition, the above path looks like it is from a localhost installation on a workstation or from the Joomla 3.9.2 installation package.

According to the error messages and relying on the list of folders and their permissions from the FPA results for Joomla 3.6.2, the path to the write-enabled log folder should look like this:

I was able to get into the control side of the site. Now I'm having issues with it displaying correctly. Above is the latest FPA report. Anyone have any suggestions?

Which template are you using? Is that template compatible with Joomla 3.10? If the front end template was working with Joomla 3.6.2, it may now have issues with Joomla 3.10.11.

Right now the website displays the following PHP warning:

The message about the PHP statement 'continue' shows that the website was not updated fully to Joomla 3.10.11 because line 97 of modules/mod_menu/helper.php is actually blank in Joomla 3.10.11. Did the update from Joomla 3.6.2 to 3.10.11 fail half way?

JCE 2.6.11 was released almost six years ago and should be updated to the latest version, 2.9.34.
