problems after server move

Post by maestroc » Tue Mar 18, 2025 8:48 pm

We moved our site to a new server in prep to upgrade to J4/5. After moving it though outbound emails via Joomla do not seem to work. When I have it send a test email via the configuration>Server tab I get the error

An error has occurred while fetching the JSON data: HTTP 524 status code.

This happens regardless of whether I have the email set to use SMTP, PHP, or Sendmail.

Our DNS is hosted at Cloudflare and I have already changed all relevant DNS to point to the new server (DMARC, SPF, DKIM all show valid in cpanel's email deliverability tests).

Any ideas what might be going on?

AFAIK, the DNS settings etc take a day or two to propagate - they are not with immediate effect.

How did you move the site. WIth Akeeba, or import/export database and copy / FTP the system files as outlined in this documentation? https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website

A quick Google search reveals that HTTP 524 is a CloudFlare-specific error (so I wouldn't say the problem is with Joomla). I would contact Cloudflare support or browse their support forums. But I'd still wait a day or two for the DNS settings to settle.

It turned out that the new server had port 25 blocked on it by the datacenter. Once we worked around that everything started working again.
